Wizzy News v1 19 July 2017

Hi everyone

Welcome to this weeks Wizzy News – our weekly roundup of news and events at Wisborough Green Cricket Club

A slightly different format of Wizzy News this week because of the large number of pictures in this edition.

We report on a number of games this week which includes an incredible 146 scored by one of our senior players – and a host of other games with some great results.

We also remember our former captain Tim Monday this week, and have a large number of pics from President’s Day. We hope you enjoy them.

We have included the ‘on fire’ Fire on Apple iOS 10.3 emoji next to player’s performance of note this week and we have no fewer than 3 honours boards because of the great performances – long may it continue.

Remembering Tim Monday

A large number of Wisborough Green players attended Tim’s funeral service in Worthing and the Wake at West Chiltington Cricket Club on Wednesday.

A number of very touching tributes were read out at the service and many fond memories of Tim were shared. Our Cricket Club presented Tim’s son Jack a ‘Book of Memories ‘ where a number of players recalled their memories of Tim. Tim will be particularly remembered for the way he embodied the spirit of cricket and his positive outlook on the cricket field even when the rest of the team were struggling. He will forever be remembered with a smile.

Presidents Day

Thank you Mr President for a fantastic President’s day – and thank you to all those who contributed to make it a memorable day. Thank you in particular to Lena, John’s fiancée for the tremendous effort she put into preparing the food which was thoroughly enjoyed by all

Firsts vs Brighton and Hove

Picture of our First team shortly after observing a minutes silence in memory of Tim

The weather was  fair in Wisborough – Brighton & Hove’s Neville Ground was a different story – cold and windy…

Having had a hard week with the sad loss of our old team mate Tim Monday, Wisborough were in no mood to mess around. I asked all players to give another 25% on their performance and after a minutes silence before the game, the players did not disappoint.

The wicket looked poor and after taking advice from the experienced Tim Dodd,  we decided to bat after winning the toss. As it turned out it was the right decision.

There were some frights in the wicket batting first and Dodd was dismissed without scoring.  Napper then came to the crease and crafted a balanced Innings of 51 and looked totally in control. However the fireworks the other end with ‘Our Benjamin’ were like sitting on the London Eye on New Years Eve. Benjamin batted very soundly and watchful for the early part of his innings, then exploded to dismiss the bowling to all parts of the ground. Benjamin reached 50 in no time and then set about the bowling creating more carnage. He reached a very well deserved 100 in 18 overs and was dismissed with the score on 214 for a brilliant 146. It was great to see the patience and desire to build an innings. Well done Benjamin.

Wisborough players came and went but Napper stuck to the task and was eventually out for 51. The score finished on 249 for 7.

Byron Napper opened the bowling and bowled well taking the 1st 2 wickets. Hugo March opened the bowling the other end and bowled with the control and skill we are becoming accustomed to see.

Jamie Self took over from Byron and  bowled brilliantly – putting the ball in the right areas and causing all sorts of problems for the batters who struggled to get him away. Self the ‘bowler who loves to bat’ dismissed the Brighton Middle order and finished with fantastic figures of 9 overs 5 for 31. Ben Thatcher, Harry Sedgwick and Jack Sizzey Carter finishing off the other batsmen to dismiss Brighton for 145.

We could not have performed better after a hard week and I would like to thank all of the players for a top performance dedicated to our Old Friend.

I would also like to thank Jenny Jones, Tom and Joel Colbran for making the trip to Brighton to support their Club and team mates.

President’s Day – Presidents X1 vs Chairman’s X1

On his first Presidents Day John Pleasants and his Fiancee Lena have worked tirelessly to create a great day for Wisborough Green Cricket Club. With support from The 3 Crowns,, The Cricks, and Sarah from behind the bar in the Pav, all was on track.

The day started with the ‘fizzy stuff’ and our local connoisseur NSP would have approved. Lunch was a banquet of meats, thai curry, pies of various shapes and sizes, salads and of course the wonderful puddings – Banofee pie taking centre stage.

Lunch was a great success with great wines supplied from the pavilion washing down the food.
John Pleasants then did a great speech and welcomed his guests, I struggled through a few words about Timbo Monday and a minutes silence.

Then the match began, the Presidents Team Batted first Rohit Jagota and Benjamin Steyn playing well and getting the team off to a great start. Luckily we know the areas Benjamin hits the ball and it wasn’t long before he was dismissed well caught on the boundary by Thatch. Rohit then crafted a fine 62 and the Now (with football approaching) inform Byron Napper hit 69….Hugo continued to bowl well after easily dismissing Steyn, and grabbed 3 wickets. Ben Thatcher rolled back the years and middle aged spread and bagged a couple, while Tim Kelleway also was in the wickets. The Presidents Team were always batting well and finished on 191 for 8 in 30 overs.

The Chairmans team started slowly and cautiously with Dan Smith and Stuart Davey, but Davey was soon dismissed.

The Chairmans team struggled for the first 15 overs, with players coming and going, Steyn bowled well and finally realised the 3 wooden things are an additional way to get the batsman out. Finishing on 2 for 11. Harry Sedgwick also bowled well and grabbed a couple of wickets. Tim Dodd tried his best with a great exhibition of stroke play and sheer force to smash 63. Helped in part by Kelloway, Thatcher and Sadler.

The Chairmans team finished 19 short on 172, but a great day was had by all. Many thanks to Neil Trestrail for Captaining the Presidents Team. Beer and medals followed and a few stragglers finished off the wine.
Many thanks to Rob Knight for scoring and Tim Dodd for switching from Umpire to batsman.

A Great day was had by all, many thanks to all that helped and contributed and of course all the clubs guests.

Under 8’s vs  West Chiltington CC

Saturday morning at Collard’s field saw the Wisborough Green Colts Under 8’s play their second game for the season against West Chiltington CC. Preceding the game, a one minute silence was held by the players and spectators in memory of Tim Monday, who sadly passed away the previous weekend.

Our captain for the match, Willem, won the toss and sent West Chiltington in to bat. The Wisborough Green Colts bowled and fielded exceptionally well. Well done to all the Colts who did a great job given it was one of their first games. They all bowled exceptionally well.
West Chiltington ended their innings on 298 off 24 overs

Wisborough Green set about chasing the total. All the pairs, Jody and Luc, Cameron and Charlie, Sam and Otis, Daisy and Cameron, Willem and Matthew and Chris and Karl along with Rafferty and Lilly who kindly played for West Chiltington, contributed positive totals to the score. Congratulations to Otis who was the highest scorer with 20 runs.

Wisborough Green finished their innings on a total score of 287 off their 24 overs.

All in all a great team performance by the Wisborough Green Colts and they all should be very proud of the way they played.
