Welcome to Wizzy News – our weekly roundup of news and events at Wisborough Green Cricket Club.
Vigilance Against Cricket Ball Injury
Wisborough Green Cricket Club is a vibrant, community-focused club where the safety and well-being of our players, members, volunteers, and visitors is paramount.
Cricket balls are hard and travel at high speeds. Our beautiful green is a multi-use open space, and the risk of a cricket ball striking someone is a real hazard. We must all work together to minimize the possibility of personal injury.
We ask everyone—players, parents, members, and spectators—to maintain a high level of vigilance during the following key times:
Friday Evening Junior Training
Friday nights are fantastic, busy, and full of energy, which means there are many training groups sharing the outfield simultaneously.
Parents & spectators please always remain alert. Please keep away from the nets area and keep a close eye on younger siblings who are not participating in active training.
Junior and Senior Cricket Matches
During live matches, the speed of the game increases, and a ball can be hit toward the boundary or spectator areas in a split second.
Please keep your eyes on the match whether you are walking around the green, sitting on the boundary, or chatting near the pavilion. If you see younger spectators or bystanders who may be distracted from the game please remind them to be remain vigilant.
Thank you for your ongoing cooperation in keeping our club a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for everyone.

The rules of cricket
The rules of cricket can sometimes seem confusing. For those who are new to the game here is a great 1 1/2 minute video explaining what a no-ball is. What better person to explain it than Stephen Fry, former MCC President and lifelong cricket fan ..

Honours Boards
Every week we recognise some noteworthy performances by our players. Congratulations to all the players who appear on the boards this week

Friday night training
Parking
Parking along the Kirdford road remains an issue for us during Friday night training. Last year an ambulance was unable to get through and had to drive across a section of the green to reach a sick patient in one of the properties in Wyatt Close, we clearly cannot have a repeat of this. We ask you to park at the Village Hall or Songhurst Meadow and walk to the green from there.
Kit
We have lots of information on our ‘Ordering Kit‘ web page including a link to the Gray Nicholls Store online store where kit can be purchased. The web page includes some useful videos on how to choose the right junior bat , how to choose the right bat size and how much you should spend on a junior bat. We have also included details of helmet sizes and a pads size guide.
Hats
Our new hats have arrived – they can be purchased at the BBQ on Friday evening – juniors £10 , ladies £12 and senior men £15
Stem/neck guards
We have recently purchased a number of green helmets with stemguards that are available to use. Can we please appeal to all juniors playing hardball matches to wear stemguards on their helmets. This is now mandatory and will also be rolled out for all those under the age of 18yo within the Adult League. Sussex Cricket have made it very clear – no stem guard – no batting in matches.

Under 12 vs Roffey
Match Report by Captain James Jackson
So my first game as captain was away at Roffey.
It was a very hot day and wanted to bat first and luckily even though we lost the toss the opposition put us in to bat.
We started well and had 66-1 off the first 10 overs and ended up getting 139-4, Leo got 26 not out, I got 22, and Charlie got 21.
We then had a break and had Maryland cookies, custard creams and my favourite bourbons.
We then fielded and Leo opened bowling and took a wicket to get us going, everyone bowled and fielded well and Jack, Leo and Bobby all took good catches. Reuben, Ethan and Ollie all took one wicket, Jack took 2 and Cai took 3 wickets in just over 1 overs. We won!
The opposition didn’t pick a man of the match but I chose Cai.

Fantastic victory by the Under 12’s
Under 11’s vs Rudgwick
By Captain, Charlie Brown
We won the toss and decided to field first.
We got our wickets early on and we had a lot of energy and positivity in the field.
Jack H did a great job bowling, 3 for 12, wow! Barnaby got 2 wickets in a row, accurate and pacey! Henry also contributed with 2 excellent wickets. Jack B did an amazing catch and Seth at fine leg, threw the ball in and hit the wickets a couple of times.
We chased our score early on and hit some amazing boundaries and singles. An amazing 6 from Barnaby, and great effort all round which meant we won by 53 runs.
Lovely sun was bursting through all evening making it enjoyable for everyone. Big thank you to Peter and all the other helpers and scorers.

Smiles all round after a great victory ..
Under 10 vs Lingfield
Match report by captain Zachary Crawford
I was chosen as Captain and was very excited for this game. We were playing at home and I wanted another Win for our team.
It was our toughest game yet as the other team were very good but we battled for the win getting 286 runs for 8 Wickets and Lingfield 272 for 11 Wickets.
They won the toss and chose to field first. I sorted the batting pairs and kept some partnerships that have worked great in the last games. Jack and Tom opened with a great 4 overs, getting 5 boundaries between them and not losing a wicket. Other partnerships were good and we got some quick runs in with some loud calling which is great.
Archie & Alfie L got their first 4’s of the season and partnered well together. Monty even got his and our teams’ first 6’s, he even got two of them, wow. 1 of them even hit the ice cream out of my cousins hand.
Me and Edward batted last and faced a couple of fast bowlers, but that didn’t stop us getting some more runs and finishing the game off with a good team score.
Fours came from: Tom (3), Jack (2), Zac (2), Archie (2), Alfie L (1), Edward (1), Monty (1) Sixes came from: Monty (2)
During the break we had a lovely cake and chocolate brownies, so thank you to the parents who made those.
Bowling started and Edward opened the bowling with Maiden over. Alfie L took our first wicket with a good catch from Archie. A good couple of overs from Archie & Charlie with good straight lines. Tom got our next wicket with a bowl and catch, then another wicket with a great catch from Edward. I then bowled again, taking 3 wickets in my over, 2 bowled and 1 diving catch. It was great as the team all cheered me and came over to say congratulations. Tom and Edward both took another wicket each, followed by Alfred getting 2 wickets in his over, 1 bowled, and one catch from Archie. Alfie L took our last wicket of the day.
Wickets – Zac 3, Tom 3 (Edward 1xC), AlfieL 2 ( Archie 1xC), Alfred 2 (Archie 1xC), Edward 1.
All the boys did well with fielding but we must keep practising our overthrows. I really enjoyed being captain and winning yet another game!! By Zac
Zachary Crawford U10s Captain vs Lingfield

Toughest challenge of the season so far. Always good to get on the right side of the result in these games. Well done boys
And finally – spotted out and about …
(nothing to do with cricket usually – any excuse to have a little chuckle ..)
For those who are old enough to remember …

That’s it for this week.
If there is anything we need to know you know where to find us
Have a great cricketing week 🏏😊
Cheers
Wizzy
