Welcome to Wizzy News – our weekly roundup of news and events at Wisborough Green Cricket Club.
Welcome to Wisborough Josh May
We are delighted to welcome Josh May to Wisborough Green for the cricketing season. Josh is our overseas player and has already had his first taste of English cricket having turned out for our First X1 on Saturday. Josh is a leg spinning allrounder and plays for Mitchell Park CC, near Adelaide . He is used to bowling on artificial wickets and he is very much looking forward to seeing how it turns for him on the hallowed turf – and so are we!!!
At Mitchell Park Josh plays with his brother and his dad, so very similar to Wisborough in terms of being a family orientated club.
Sporting a bristling moustache – in the manner of Australian greats such as Allan Border and David Boon, Josh looks every inch the quality cricketer. We are delighted to welcome you and hope you enjoy your stay with us.
While the English can only reminisce of “moral Ashes Victories” in recent years – we look forward to hearing from Josh how the Aussies are preparing for the Ashes series in England next year and returning the urn to it’s rightful home in England..😉

The Primary Club
The Primary Club is a charity financially supporting grassroots visually impaired sports in the U.K. What is rather unique about the club is that in order to join you have to have been out first ball in any form of cricket thus providing a silver lining to the cloud of the Golden Duck – a badge of honour for treading common ground alongside the finest of cricket greats.
After joining you are able to purchase merchandise to ensure that your achievement is noticed and celebrated by others. The tie is naturally a collectors item and a IYKYK (if you know you know) amongst cricketers at all levels.
It’s early in the season and a number of Wisborough Green players (most notably in the Second X1) have already qualified to join the club. Please don’t miss out on the opportunity to join the club and wear that tie with pride …
The great Stuart Broad is the patron, and countless Test cricketers are members.

Livestreaming
Many thanks to our livestreaming team and Suzanna Braddock in particular for all the hard work in bringing livestreaming to the club and spending many hours generating fantastic videos and player cards. A number of our players who are currently travelling have been tuning in to watch games live on the Green and have enjoyed being part of the action. We are all looking forward to seeing the upcoming Second X1 match against Bosham on Saturday . Please click here for a sneak peak at this week’s player reel.
The stream can be watched on the match centre for the fixture on our Playcricket site https://wisboroughgreen.play-cricket.com/Matches?tab=Fixture or our Youtube channel : https://www.youtube.com/@WisboroughGreenCricketClub

Honours Boards
Every week we recognise some noteworthy performances by our players. Congratulations to all the players who appear on the board this week
Many thanks to Suzanna Braddock for giving our Honours board a facelift

Friday night training
The weather prospects aren’t looking particularly promising for cricket on the Green on Friday evening and we will be monitoring the situation very closely during the day on Friday. We know how much the children look forward to their Friday evening sessions and if we have to cancel the sessions it will be done with a very heart. The safety of the children will however always be the greatest priority. We will post regular updates on our website during the day in the ‘Latest News’ section of our home page Please click here
Parking
Parking along the Kirdford road remains an issue for us during Friday night training. Last year an ambulance was unable to get through and had to drive across a section of the green to reach a sick patient in one of the properties in Wyatt Close, we clearly cannot have a repeat of this. We ask you to park at the Village Hall or Songhurst Meadow and walk to the green from there.
Kit
We have lots of information on our ‘Ordering Kit‘ web page including a link to the Gray Nicholls Store online store where kit can be purchased. The web page includes some useful videos on how to choose the right junior bat , how to choose the right bat size and how much you should spend on a junior bat. We have also included details of helmet sizes and a pads size guide.
Hats
Our new hats have arrived – they can be purchased at the BBQ on Friday evening – juniors £10 , ladies £12 and senior men £15
Stem/neck guards
We have recently purchased a number of green helmets with stemguards that are available to use. Can we please appeal to all juniors playing hardball matches to wear stemguards on their helmets. This is now mandatory and will also be rolled out for all those under the age of 18yo within the Adult League. Sussex Cricket have made it very clear – no stem guard – no batting in matches.

Under 12 vs Horsham
Match Report by Captain Jack Brazier
Horsham won the toss and chose to bat first in perfect cricketing conditions on Saturday morning.
We started really well and got three quick wickets to make it 22-3, with James taking two (including a great caught and bowled) and Charlie getting one.
Horsham then batted much better, with three players retiring on 25. We finished the innings strongly, bowling out the rest of the team with Eddie, Oliver, Archie and Jack all getting wickets.
We were set 142 to win.
The chase didn’t start well, with Eddie out first ball, unlucky to be caught after hitting it well. Charlie came in and scored 7 and James played well to score 18, but wickets kept falling with Jack and Buddy out without scoring.
Leo and Bobby then had a good partnership and kept us in the game. Leo retired, and Bobby batted really well at the end with some help from Freddie. Bobby retired in the last over and was named Man of the Match.
We finished on 120-5, just falling short of the target but it was a great game played in good spirit.

Under 10 vs Storrington
Match report by Captain Alfie Letchford
It was the second match of the season for the team but the first for many players this week. It was a very hot morning playing away against storrington.
It was a very even game with great batting and bowling from both sides. We only just won scoring 257 runs for 7 wickets with storrington scoring 247 for 9.
I lost the toss and storrington choose to bat first which I was happy with so that we would know the score we had to chase.
Bowling got underway with Edward who, with the first ball of the game, took an amazing wicket. Fast bowling from Jack Bowbrick, Ted, Tom and Edward saw further wickets fall.
In the final over, Edward bowled taking two wickets thanks to a great catch from Zac, encouraged by shouts of ‘ catches win matches’ from Jack.
The fielding was organised well with great commitment from Theo, Finn, Archie, Zac and Jack Braddock who all had great awareness of field positions and worked hard with boundary stops and catches.
At the break the biscuits and drinks were excellent but I would love a bit of cake as well next time.
Batting started with a team talk from Jack Braddock saying ‘protect our stumps, they are our best friends’ . It seemed to work with both he and partner Tom both getting 4’s to set the standard. Fours were scored by Jack Braddock (3), Tom (1), Zac (1), Edward (2) and Finn (1).
It was a very close game which was in the balance as we went into the final four overs.Edward and I faced some very fast bowling and did well to just hold out to take the win.
Storrington chose Edward as the man of the match which was well deserved following his batting performance in the last overs against fierce bowling from Storrington.
Captaining the team was fun and I enjoyed it especially as we won.

Smiles all round after a nailbiting victory
Can you help in any way ?
We have over 200 juniors enjoying playing cricket this year which is in itself a major undertaking. There is an increasingly smaller group of volunteers who put a lot of effort to keep the show on the road and we would welcome support from parents – particularly scorers , umpires , tea makers etc etc . If you are able to help in any way please do let us know. We could do with a lot more help – even if its on an occasional basis
And finally – spotted out and about …
(nothing to do with cricket usually – any excuse to have a little chuckle ..)

That’s it for this week.
If there is anything we need to know you know where to find us
Have a great cricketing week 🏏😊
Cheers
Wizzy
