Welcome this week’s Wizzy News.
It’ s been some weeks since our previous Wizzy News – hope you haven’t missed us too much !
Lots to report on this week with both our Firsts and Seconds in action and a a memorable 162 not out by our Club President Steve Calder Smith.
Colts Sussex Junior festivals
Our under 12 and 14 teams participated in the annual Sussex Junior festival cup competitions in recent weeks. The format of the games are a lot longer than our players are used to and competition was tough. Our players enjoyed the challenge and there were some fantastic performances that are worth noting . Congratulations to all the players for their achievements and in particular to those who made it onto the honours board .
Congratulations to all the seniors who made it onto the honours board this week.
The standout performance was clearly the 162 no by our Club President Steve Calder Smith who not only surpassed his previous highest score, but recorded the highest ever score by a Wisborough Green player according the stats in Playcricket. What was quite remarkable about the innings was that Steve was at the crease from the very first ball of the innings to the last and didn’t give the oppo a single chance. It was a pure masterclass in patience – blocking the good balls and targeting the bad. No rash shots – just simple strokeplaying , taking the singles where appropriate and despatching to the boundary when the opportunity presented itself. No sixes were hit in Steve’s innings and there were no massive slogs – just an unhurried accumulation of runs. What was particularly special about the innings is that Steve’s son Joey batted alongside Steve for a good part of the innings and scored an impressive 46 no.
To give the innings some context , we dug into the records in Playcricket and extracted the top scores in every season going back to 2008 – shown in the honours board below. Those who have been at the club for a while may well have fond memories of the games in question.
It should of course be pointed out that the 2020 season isn’t over yet with 2 games still to be played. Judging by the fighting talk of first team skipper Jonny Farmer, there may well be a different name at the top of the leader board for 2020. Time will tell…..
Well done Mr President !

Seconds vs Southwater
With a drastic change to the weather, Wisborough welcomed Southwater Seconds . With several players having played in the first team game last week, Southwater’s spirits seemed high winning the toss and electing to field first.
It didn’t take long for the Calder Smith show to get going. After losing his opening partner in the second over, Steve put his head down and started piling on the runs, sharing 100 plus partnerships with Jack Dixon and Richard Wilson . He was then joined by Joey who until that point had never had a partnership of more than 5 runs with his dad.
85 runs later, Joey and Steve were still together – Steve having carried his bat through forty overs for an amazing 162 not out and Joey having just missed out on his 50 by not hitting the final ball of the innings to the boundary.
So for what may well be the first time in history, Wisborough 2nd XI amassed an astonishing 322.
After all the fireworks of the Wisborough innings, Southwater were less adventurous allowing regular wickets to fall. After Captain Frank and Will Dixon dismissed the top 4 , the Green looked to Henry Sunderland and Chris Marshall who both got a wicket before Josh Dixon came on to bowl, wrapping things up nice and quickly ending up with 3 wickets for 2 runs in his 2.2 overs.
What a memorable game . Next week we have Horsham Trinity 2nds. Currently sitting second in the group, level on points with Storrington, but with a lower net run rate, we need to make sure we win the next two to be in with a chance of winning the group.
