President’s Day – Women’s team vs Barbarians

President’s Day on Sunday was a lovely day in the Wisborough Green cricketing calendar, and the Women’s team were honoured to be taking part in it.  Without a scheduled league fixture, we invited players from West Chiltington, Billingshurst, and Petworth to form the ‘Barbarians,’ and Fluff kindly agreed to switch to the oppo to complete the team.

Expertly captained by Sarah from West Chilt, the oppo won the toss and elected to field. Hoping the wicket was drying fast after Saturday’s deluge, Wizzy opened their campaign.  First up Natalie and daughter Edie.  Opening batter Natalie scored at a steady pace with no loss, and Edie, new to the game, followed the example.  The pair set us on our way laying down a respectable 13 runs.  Next pair Bex and Ann continued to add at a decent pace.  Patience paid off as Ann pulled her first boundary past deep square, to huge cheers, and taking the pair’s contribution to 35 runs.  Nadia and Suzanna followed, adding a solid 15 runs between them, and our younger players Fizz and Jo put on an impressive 27 runs, all including extras.  Special mention of our junior players Jo, Fizz and Edie who stepped up to play for the Women and showed great maturity and skill.

Losing three wickets in total, Wizzy gave the oppo a target of 91 to win.

With preparations for the President’s lunch in full swing, and VPs, afternoon players and guests starting to arrive, we set about the task of fielding.  Nadia opened the bowling attack. Switching to around the wicket against the more experienced batters was paying off, and Nadia gave just 13 runs away from her 3 overs. Jo, our youngest player, bowled a beautiful line and length. Ann, Fizz, Natalie and Bex all had parts to play. Suzanna was kept busy at cover, and Natalie was sharp keeping wicket for the first time.  Thanks to Joshie’s spin bowling masterclass earlier in the week, some attempts to spin the ball created a few near catches, and finally a great catch from Edie at mid-wicket to Bex’s bowling gave Wizzy their first (and only) wicket.

The oppo, helped by Fluff, were matching the Wizzy run rate. Field placing and adapting position to batter is something we are keen to improve on and this was a great opportunity to practise. Edging to the final over, the chase remained close and the oppo needed 9 runs from the last 12 balls.  Fielders came in to stop the singles and encourage a wicket.  On to the last 6 balls, and with 2 runs needed for the win it was all to play for.  Fizz took on the final over and bowled brilliantly starting with 4 dot balls, each cheered by the gathering crowd. Then a near wide and a single run secured victory for the Baa-baas by only 2 runs!

Thanks go to the oppo for a great match, and we’re delighted they could stay for some President’s Day hospitality.  Thanks again to our youngsters for stepping up, to Mike Gadd for scoring at a minute’s notice, to Peter as ever for umpiring and your support.  And thanks to the organisers of President’s Day and the afternoon match v the Kenyan Kongonis. A day thoroughly enjoyed by all.
