First X1 vs West Chiltington

March’s Redemption

• WG host top of the league West Chilt
• Another important toss lost and WG inserted (always get inserted on a damp wicket)
• Vickery plays on second ball, whilst trying to leave it
• Despite the guys working hard to dig in, luck wasn’t on our side, and we failed to recover from a poor start
• Vickery’s funky batting line-up backfires with WG dismissed for 118
• Chilt tucked into all the pizza at tea
• Full on pizza Tatchell hits March’s first ball straight up and Tommy takes the catch – REDEMPTION IS SWEET!
• Green put up a strong battle in the field but Chilt batting was strong and not enough runs on the board
• We bowled tightly and forced some errors
• The chances we did get we took well
• On to next week

Second X1 vs Crawley

A disappointing day at the office for the Seconds who might have let promotions hopes slip against second places Crawley CC.

Toss won on a difficult pitch we asked the opposite to bat and felt very pleased with ourselves as wickets tumbled with regularity. Good fielding, straight bowling and catches held limited Crawley to 157 (possibly 30 too many) but nothing to be sniffed at. However, we psyched ourselves out and crumbled quicker than the pitch did, all out for just over hundred. Brief moments of grit from Callum and Browny gave us some hope, but we couldn’t take the chance to take second in the league and have much to do going into the last 5 games. No-one but ourselves to blame… that’s just cricket sometimes.

Ladies Hardball vs Southwater

On a hot day, playing away, we played our penultimate game in the hardball league last Sunday against Southwater CC.

The oppo won the toss and elected to field first.

Giving away only two wickets, and with extras, we set a sizeable target of 132 to win. Southwater are big hitters, so we knew we had to keep the fielding tight. Unusually for us these days we didn’t take any wickets, but our fielding positions, backing up and game awareness have really come on.

As the oppo’s fourth and final pair stepped in, they needed 35 runs to win, and we pushed out to protect the boundary. With Jen, Hannah V, Jo and Maggie bowling the last four, the threat of defeat was gradually disappearing. Maggie was especially economic, giving away only 6 runs from her three overs, an economy of 2! Special mention also of Jo’s bowling. With great line and length, Jo only gave away 13 from her three overs. The oppo’s final pair managed to put on 24 runs, but landed short of the target and we won by 9 runs.

This was a great team effort. The mindset has moved from can we win to how do we win against this opposition. We are currently sitting at the top of the league, and have one more match to play, again against Southwater, which will decide who gets the top spot and proceed to the finals. Not bad for our first season of hardball!

Very much included in the team is the support we have from family and players who came along to cheer us on, thank you. Enjoying this win, we took the debrief back to the village to watch the rest of WG vs the Kongonis. All in all, another great day of Wisborough Green cricket.

Sunday vs Kongonis

Wisborough welcomed the Kenya Kongonis to the Green on Sunday. Kongonis won the toss and elected to field.

Ed and Reuben Bowes opened the batting (first time father and son had ever done that). They both batted well before Reuben was bowled to 7. Ed batted beautifully for 46, before being run out by James Newman. James then had responsibility to get the score ticking over and he obliged with a well crafted 58. other contributions from Harvey Bartholemew, Harry Hunter, Leon Kilford and James Sadler got Wisborough total to 165 in 30 overs.

Kongonis started their innings and lost their first wicket with the first ball of the innings bowled by Harry Hunter. Harry bowled his 6 overs with great skill and finished with 3 for 22. James Newman bowled up the hill and had the batsmen jumping about, and finished with 4 overs 1-15. Buddy Edwardes and Harvey Bartholomew bowled well in the middle overs keeping Kongonis under pressure. Then Luke Kilford 2 for 11 and Reuben Bowes 3 for 7 destroyed the opposition and they were all out for 120.

A great game, some excellent performances. Many thanks to Rob Knight for scoring.

Under 14 vs Roffey

Wisborough Green U14s had a successful away trip to Roffey. After winning the toss, we opted to bowl first, hoping to make the most of the early conditions. The bowlers delivered, with Jack taking two wickets and Henry Foden making some sharp stops behind the wicket. A standout moment came when debutant Kayden, Jack and Ethan took their first wickets for the u14 team—an exciting milestone for them!

Roffey’s total was high but we felt confident chasing it down. Our batsmen played well, with Tristan and Jack smashing a few boundaries to keep the runs up. Despite a couple of nervous moments from the team, we comfortably chased down the target.

Roffey fought hard, but Wisbrough Green came out on top. It was a great collaboration between the younger and older players that earned us the win.

Captaining was a great experience but next time we need to focus on being vocal

Well done to all the players

Under 12 vs Steyning

This match was really important for us — it was our first win of the season and everyone was really excited.

We played at home against Steyning. They won the toss and chose to bowl first, so we went in to bat. We worked hard, played smart cricket, and finished with 118 runs, which gave us a good chance.

When it was our turn to bowl, the whole team stayed focused. Bobby was brilliant — he bowled fast and accurately earning man of the match.

Steyning ended on 83 runs with 3 wickets left. It felt amazing to finally get a victory after trying so hard all season. The whole team was proud, and we hope to keep the winning going!

Under 11 vs Southwater – Cricket by moonlight

Match report by Ben Carruthers (with a little help from mum and dad)

What an amazing match! I’m so excited thinking about tonight’s game against Southwater. This was even better than Monday’s India vs England match – and that was incredible! I can’t wait to tell everyone about it.

The Bowling Masterclass

We won the toss and decided to bowl first, which turned out to be a great decision! Charlie started us off brilliantly – two wickets in his first few overs! Just like that, we had Southwater on the back foot. Everyone was cheering!

Then Jack Brazier showed his incredible accuracy with another perfect direct hit run-out! He’s definitely earned his title as our Run-Out King.

Ethan Cooke was bowling really fast and keeping the Southwater batsmen under pressure. They were having to work hard for every run, and you could see they respected his pace.

But wait, it gets better! The captain and coach brought on Buddy, Cai, and Freddie and they all bowled really well. There was a wicket among them and they really helped keep Southwater’s score down to something we could chase.

Just when Southwater started getting some runs together, Leo came on to bowl. And WOW! Two direct hit wickets! The first one was technically a free hit, but Leo didn’t care – he just kept his cool and bowled another absolute beauty that smashed into the stumps. The whole team ran over to celebrate with him!

Southwater did fight back though – their man of the match started hitting these massive sixes that were flying into people’s gardens! The administrator said it was a record for lost balls in one match – but honestly, it made it even more exciting!

They finished on 306, which seemed like loads but we were all pumped up and ready to chase it down!

The Chase

Jack and Buddy opened our batting and they were brilliant! 35 runs from the first partnership – they were running between the wickets really well and finding the boundaries. What a great start!

Ben and Ethan came in next, but Southwater had some good bowlers on and they got a couple of wickets. My stomach was doing somersaults because suddenly the game felt really tight. The scoreboard pressure was getting to everyone! Thank goodness for Freddie and Ollie – they came in and just steadied everything. No panic, just good solid cricket. They kept picking up singles and twos, getting us closer and closer to that target. Every run felt like a victory!

Then James and Cai had to deal with the light starting to fade. It was getting so dark we could barely see the ball! That’s when they brought out the pink ball – it was like magic! Suddenly we could see everything again and the match was back on. James and Cai were running between the wickets like they were in the Olympics – their calling was perfect and they never looked like getting run out.

The Most Dramatic Finish EVER!

With the final pair in and not many runs needed, Leo and Charlie came out for the last partnership. My heart was beating so fast I thought it might explode! They started brilliantly, getting the scores really close, when DISASTER STRUCK – Southwater got another wicket!

One over left. Just six balls. We needed a handful of runs and everyone in the crowd was on their feet shouting. I couldn’t even watch properly – I was peeking through my fingers!

But our boys were incredible! They hit a beautiful four that went racing to the boundary, and then they ran brilliantly between the wickets to secure the win. All the parents were clapping and cheering – what a finish!

What a Night!

Charlie was definitely man of the match – those early wickets and then helping to finish the job with the bat. But honestly, Leo deserved a special mention too. That spell of bowling was incredible, and even though his first wicket was from a free hit, he didn’t let it faze him at all. Just bowled another perfect delivery!

Writing this match report has got me so excited I can barely sit still! I keep replaying all the best bits in my head – Charlie’s early wickets, Jack’s run-out, Leo’s bowling spell, and that nail-biting finish.

I know we’re coming to the end of the season soon, but I really hope we get more matches like this. Both teams played with such great spirit and it was just pure cricket magic under the fading light.

Cricket by moonlight – what could be better?

WHAT A GAME! WHAT A TEAM! COME ON WISBOROUGH!

Under 10 vs Fernhurst

Match report by Finlay Pickford -Grifiths – captain

On Saturday Peter arranged a friendly against Fernhurst. We played against a mixed team of U9, U10 and U11’s in what was our first hard ball game, but they have been playing hard ball all season.

I won the toss and decided to bowl first. We got off to a good start with Henry, Seth and Charlie bowling the first three overs to two very good batters. In the fourth over we nearly had a catch, then having been hit for a six, Seth bowled their U11 player out on the next ball.

In the next over, Charlie bowled him again and there was some good fielding from Jack and George to stop a couple of fours. Unluckily George got hit on the head by an awkward bounce which was thrown in for a run out but did not hit the stumps. Seth threw a great ball into the wicket keepers end and got a lovely run out from near the boundary.

Jack didn’t give up with his bowling and ended up getting a wicket. George then came back on to the pitch.

Henry had some lovely bowling and he was unlucky not to get a wicket. Then there was some great bowling from George to get a wicket followed by a run out by Gus. Nearly a maiden over from Alex. A good over by me only giving away five runs. Seth was bowling well and then I rolled the ball hitting the stumps side on for a run out. The last three overs were good.

Fernhurst finished on 278.

Henry and I opened the batting facing their U11 player to start with who bowled very fast and bowled me out on the last ball of the over. Henry and I both hit two fours and we ran some good twos and singles in our five overs. Henry didn’t get bowled out but I did three times.

Gus and Jack were next into bat. They had some good runs, both hit some good fours and only lost a couple of wickets. They ended by picking up some nice singles and then a lovely shot from Gus for a three.

George and Alex then came in. George hit a four, they ran some good singles. Unluckily Alex was bowled on the next ball with George getting a four off the last ball of the over. Some good bowling by Fernhurst kept the runs down in their last over.

Finally, Seth and Charlie (with a bandaged finger – eat your heart out Chris Woakes!) came in with the score on 255. Fernhurst had been on the same score at the same point. Despite losing a couple of wickets early on, there was a beautiful six hit by Charlie, followed by several fours from them both.

Going into the last over we were on 277, two runs needed to win. Charlie hit another 6, followed by fours from both him and Seth meaning we finished on 292 for our second win!

It was a great performance by the team and well deserved. Well done everyone.

Man of the match: Charlie (very well deserved)
