Match reports
First X1 vs Aldwick
Another one slips through the net – we had our chance but Aldwick opener digs deep and gets them over the line.
- After winning the toss Vickery and Crombie made another positive start. Vickery getting all the luck before Crombie was unfortunate to get a good one that found the edge
- Tommy, still finding his confidence, edged one to slip and was takenly smartly – much to slips surprise
- that bought Klein to the crease who whipped his first ball through square leg, taking it off middle stump – intentions very clear
- compiling a rapid 41, including 8 boundaries the scoreboard was looking good.
- He whipped another through square leg but the boundary rider stuck out a hand and surprisingly held a brilliant low catch (maybe takes it once in 10)
- WG were 96 for 3, and just after Mattock whispered the ill fated ‘you need to bat through Dan’ – came a juicy full toss outside off stump…..Vickery having just bought up back to back half centuries was licking his lips – only to skew it up in the air for a simple catch at point!
- Jr and Joel, both took turns trying to rebuild with Farmer – adding 16 each before departing, both caught (6 of the top 7 all out caught)
- Farms shuffled in front of another and fully got fingered
- Hugo batter masterfully with the tail, memories of famous Crawley partnerships came flooding back, compiling a lovely innings of 35 and with Dave G chipping in 14 we got to 201 before Dave was struck in front and the finger was raised before appeals were even heard
- Tea was taken – with the WG boys eating all the pizza before the oppo or Farms could get a slice. With plenty of egg sarnies left over for Big John to later polish
- Wisborough knew we needed early wickets to put the squeeze of with a total likely to be slightly below par on the Wizzy Road
- Hugo, finally finding some movement rather than the middle of the oppos bat, was first to strike
- Jr then bowled No. 3 with a good’en, before Hugo bowled the bat flipping number 4
- Dave entered the attack and bowled really tightly – picking up another wicket and going for only 17 off his 7 overs (rewarded with three overs more than previous spells)
- Kleino couldn’t quite find his line or length and whilst hitting 41 with the bat conceded 40 with the ball
- Aldwick were 93-5 and the game looked like it was Wisborough for the taking – we just needed to get the other opener out and the game would open up for us
- However, White stood firm, and perhaps knowing the tail wasn’t strong put his foot down a little to continue to build to the total required
- Sizzler picked up a couple of wickets to make Aldwick 164-7, still nearly 40 needed and well into the tail
- Junior came back into the attack and was terribly unlucky to concede quickly off his last two overs, with runs coming through third man and fine leg – number 9 scoring 18 all off the edge of the bat
- Aldwick got home 7 down, with White battling through the heat to score 60% of the teams runs. Extras of 30 were the second highest scorer for Aldwick – something Knoghter would be spitting feather about if he hadn’t of been sent to Crawley!
- Special mention to Louis for admirably supporting the guys as 12th man and sub fielding when Crombie hurt his back in the warm up. Rest that back Crombie – perhaps a bit of physio and a nice firm bed, don’t do anything stupid like go to a festival…..
On to the next one – the wins will come.

Second X1 vs Crawley Eagles
A pretty average performance against a team that we could and should have beaten. A star studded line up managed to collapse from 60-0 to 92 all out in the space of about 10 overs. Yes it was hot, yes the pitch was a little dodgy, but we all knew we should have done better. In return, we took 6 Crawley Eagles wickets and wondered what might have been as they crossed the line within 20 overs. Honourable mention to Hughie Ragg who was welcomed back after 2 years in the wilderness and took an outrageous catch he had no right to take.

Womens’ team vs Slinfold
A brief report this week, which is by no means a reflection on the significance of the game. As
last Sunday saw the women venture into the world of hardball cricket in the Sussex Slam Shield.
Joined by U13 girls Lucy and Alice (thank you!) we were drawn against old rivals Slinfold for our
first outing. Winning the toss we elected to field.
Lucy set us on our way in the bowling attack, bagging a wicket from her 3 overs and finishing on 1-23. Consistent as ever, Ann was also economical. Alice impressed in the field stopping anything at mid-wicket and joining the bowling line-up. Well placed at point, Tess expertly covered the offside. Sarah, Hannah V and Jen were backing up and stopping boundaries on the legside. However, our bowling let us down this time. We trained for hardball during winter nets and then switched to softball ahead of that season starting earlier. This caught us out, but not the oppo sadly! Unused to bowling from 22 yards, we gave away too many extras and Slinfold landed on a decent haul of 155 runs.
With nothing to lose and all to play for, and being the positive team we are, we set about our run chase. Slinfold had a couple of useful bowlers, but if we had any nerves they were soon dismissed. Sarah opened with Lucy and as the U13s coach, Sarah was keen to lead by example. The pair put on a solid 15 runs.
Jen and Ann followed, and facing some tricky bowling managed to nudge the score along. Hannah V paired with Tess and both picked up the pace. Bex batted with Alice, who showed ability with quick calling and smart running. With 4 boundaries they added another 29 runs.

Under 14 vs Balcombe
A frustrating morning at Wizzy against Balcombe. The first loss this season.
We won the toss and elected to bat. I lost my wicket cheaply, and unfortunately that set the tone for the morning. Will opened strongly, but we then lost several wickets in the low single digits. This left us with a meagre 35 for 9 off 9 overs.
Then came our superstars. Ciara came in to our team as a last minute illness replacement, for which we were extremely grateful. Henry B smashed it around the park in an amazing partnership with Ciara, pulling us up to a final score of 58.
Our teamtalk focused on tight fielding and energy. We came into field with the belief that we could snatch an unlikely victory. Harry M dispatched one of their openers early, but despite our best efforts Ashaz batted himself to a solid score of 31 and retired. Our fielding was energetic and tight, with Ahaan and Ciara stopping a few on the boundary. Some great bowling performances with wickets for Buddy, Henry B and Harry M. But despite many dot balls they slowly crept towards our target, reaching it in the 17th over. we just hadn’t set a big enough target.
We left with a feeling that it was a match that we could and should have won, but most of us gave away our wickets far too cheaply. We will learn from that as a team, and come back stronger.

Under 13 girls vs Cuckfield
It was another beautiful evening as the Wisborough Green Village Mini (Party) Bus rolled into Cuckfield cricket ground with the U13 girls cricket team on board and ready for another tough game against more experienced opposition.
Lucy was this weeks captain and got to field first. For those of you who have been to this ground, it is set against a backdrop of a stunning stately home and rolling hills, with a large oak tree set in the middle of the upper ground as a target for 4!
Lucy opened the bowling and immediately took a wicket with her first ball – we were off to a flying start. Nearly all the girls went onto bowl at least one over. We welcomed a new member Nia, who proved herself to be a wonderful bowler and fielder. The fielding was kept tight with the odd stray ball allowing the oppo some unnecessary runs, and coach Sarah could be heard shouting ‘long barriers’ on a number of occasions as balls sped toward the boundary!
As usual Lola did a superb job behind the wicket and when finally allowed out from behind the stumps took two wickets in the final over of the game – tremendous effort. Eva Sloan was her partner in crime backing her up and when needed, which was rarely, but did not let a ball through.
In the field Molly, Katie, Eva T, Ciara and Jo worked hard to protect the boundaries and on more than one occasion set the bails flying from outfield throws which was very impressive!
As the girls went into bat, coach Sarah reminded them to call, start running if they were not facing and look for the 1’s. It became immediately clear that this more experienced side had some fantastic bowlers relentlessly pummeling us one after the other wth acuracy and speed, with no let up. One girl was bowling over 40 miles an hour. Sadly our less experienced side did not make it to the full 20 overs, however the sportsmanship and team spirit never faltered.
The oppo picked Lucy as batter of the match and Nia as bowler. Lola also deserves a mention for, yet again, putting in a solid performance. They are back next week and we are determined to take them!

Under 12 vs Horsham
The match went well overall though we need to work on our backing up for future games. They were a tall side with some quick bowlers with quite a few Sussex pathway players but we managed to put up a decent score.
Leo batted well and had to retire on 25. It was quite close after 10 overs when Horsham batted and Callum did a great run out. They did win with 2 overs left but we gave them some easy runs. Leo was man of the match. Thanks to Peter, coaches and scorer.

Under 11 vs Lindfield – Thursday 19 June – away
Wisborough Green U11’s vs Lindfield, Thursday 19 June 2025
On another hot sunny evening, Wisborough U11’s were playing away at Lindfield. We won the toss and chose to field first.
As a team we backed up well and in general we fielded well but some thing to work on is getting our bowling tighter because we gave away to many extras.
Seb and Archie kept wicket well and Reuben got an amazing 4! James did a brilliant job at deep fine leg while Buddy and Cai did good as a bating pair.
Despite losing the game, good fun was had by all and a big well done to the whole team!
Thanks Peter and Adam for all your help with batting and bowling order. Also, thank you parents for taking us!

Under 11 vs Lindfield – Tuesday 24 June – home
It was a nice sunny evening and we were playing Lindfield who we played last week. We knew they were good, but we still had hope that we could end the game on top.
We lost the toss and they decided to bowl first. Charlie and Leo were the first pair to bat and they gave a really solid performance. Charlie got two 4s and Leo got 1 too giving us a really good start. James and Arthur were in next and it was Arthur’s first game of the season. James hit a 4 and Arthur played well. Their bowlers were good and accurate, we were starting to feel the pressure. Next it was Reuben and Eddie’s turn to bat. Both hit a 4 and played well. Seb and Freddie were the next pair in and did a great job. The last pair were Ethan and I. The pressure was on and we knew we needed to up the runs. We tried our best and both hit two 4s.
The refreshments were definitely needed as we were playing hard and needed a drink. Thank you to all the parents who supplied and prepared them.
Back on the field and we knew we needed to keep the runs low. James was our wicket keeper and man of the match and took some great catches and a run out. What can I say about Charlie. He took 5 wickets including two caught and bowled. One was an outstanding one handed diving catch which was so impressive.
Everyone bowled really well and we weren’t out of the game yet. Eddie got two wickets and Ethan and I got 1 each. I got a bit over excited with my celebration. Reuben and Leo both played very well and kept the runs low.
Unfortunately Arthur took a ball to the head and was really hurt. He had to go off the field, luckily Reuben M had come down to support the team so came on to field for us. Thanks Reuben! Arthur was really brave and wanted to come back on the field to bowl but you have to be careful with head injuries so he sat the rest of the game out.
It was really close for a while but in the end we lost by 48 runs. It was a great team performance. Everyone did really well and I loved being captain.
On to the next game boys!

Under 10 vs Hayward Heath
This week we played away at Haywards Heath on a very hot Saturday morning.
They won the toss and chose us to bat first.
First up was George and Finley. They both batted well and scored a ‘Four’ each. A great start for Wisborough Green. Everyone had a great day batting and we saw more ‘Fours’ from Cooper, Seth, Asher, Isaac and Alex.
Our opponents were very good at bowling. We stopped a number of wickets from some very fast bowlers.
We then swapped over and fielded well against some big hitters. Seth did a great job as wicket keeper. I managed to catch out one of their strong batsmen. This raised our spirits and determination. We then saw two further catches from Jack Bowes and George. Towards the end, despite being hot and tired Isaac bowled a great wicket.
The match ended 321 to 265. Despite our loss there were some great improvements from everyone. Haywards Heath were a strong team with some players from the Sussex team.
I really enjoyed being Captain and was extremely proud of our performance.
Well done Wisborough Green
