Sunday X1 vs Believers
Sunday cricket was back on the Green, with a game against the very positive sounding Believers CC. When arranging the fixture, I suggested a number of Sunday options to their captain. When July 20th came up he said: “that would be perfect! I’m getting married nearby the day before, and the reception is at the house next to the Village Shop! Most of the players will be at the wedding anyway!” Now this sounded like a man very confident in his wife’s devotion. He’s clearly set the bar exactly where he wants it for a happy marriage. I can only imagine what he does around the house to be rewarded with that kind of cricketing support. I hope he told her before the wedding.
The reception went late into the night, and Believers CC staggered across the Green ready for a 2pm start. The sky was blue, and the wind had dried the square of the overnight rain. All was looking good as we inspected the wicket, when the heavens opened and dumped a month’s worth of rain in the middle of the Green within about 3 minutes. We quickly covered the strip but the rest of the square immediately became waterlogged. The Believers weren’t bothered – they were still tucking into their BBQ, and cracking on with the “hair of the dog”
An hour later, all was good again, and the Green was bathed in sunshine. The Believers asked if they could bowl first as some of their players were still half cut, and a few hours in the field might sober them up. We sent Ollie Warmington and his school friend William Plowright out to face the attack and both started positively. The bowling was “friendly” rather than fierce, but you’ve still got to hit what’s in front of you. We set an individual retirement of 40 in order to try and make sure everyone got the chance to contribute. Ollie, Harry Hunter and Oscar Warmington all walked off unbeaten with scores of 40 or more. Enforced jug avoidance. The boundaries were peppered, and the fact the top 5 batsmen all had strike rates of well over 100, showed how commanding a batting performance it was. Dave McCullagh looked like a man who’s waited for his opportunity and took it – pulling and punching the ball to the boundary. A score of 226 off 30 over looked competitive.
Tea was a Cricks affair. They never let us down, with a selection of ham and mustard, cheese and chutney, Tuna mayo and egg mayo (with dairy free options). Pizza, quiche and some other savouries were given an absolutely top tier finish by some jam and cream scones, freshly prepared by Wendy Maggs that morning.
Time was ticking , and few of the Believers realised that they had a train to catch back to London, sooner than they thought. They started with the belief that the target could be reached in time, but without the conviction. 5-1, 10-2, 16-3 – the wickets kept tumbling from the start. Harry Maggs and Thomas Westgarth took a couple a piece, while Buddy Edwardes chipped in with one. Thomas is a cousin of the Maggs family, over from Australia, and a fine cricketer. He’s welcome back any time. Harry Hunter and Oscar Warmington were a nice pair to bring on 4th and 5th change, and they certainly blew away the remnants of any hangovers the Believers were still holding onto. Oscar took 2 wickets, while his brother Ollie, Harry H and Will Plowright all took one each to make it a fine team effort.
Our total of 226 was never in danger, and when the final wicket fell in the final over, the Believer’s believed no more.
Charlie Maunder made a welcome return with an immaculate performance behind the stumps and 16 runs, while Josh Braddock was kept busy in the field. Phil Maggs skippered on the field masterfully and made sure everyone got a decent opportunity. A Sunday game without at least one Dixon is virtually unheard of. Let’s not let that happen again. Twickenham next week. My old club. There’s be some decent but hopefully aging players on display.

Under 11 vs Horsham Trinity
We had an evening match so it was a bit chilly. It was at home against Horsham Trinity…again! We lost the toss and had to bat first but we would have bowled if we had won the toss. We struggled to get boundaries but took lots of singles when we could. Jack hit two 4s and James, Seb and Freddie also hit 4s. We protected our stumps very well, only getting out five times in total.
Thank you to the parents for the drinks and snacks, also to Lucy who baked us a cake…yum!
Time to bowl, we kept the run rate down and took 13 wickets. Great one handed diving catch from Seb, Reuben caught one that dipped low to the ground and I caught one above my head. Myself and Eddie both got a maiden over each and we only gave away 18 no balls and wides in the innings.
We won the game comfortably by 118 runs and really enjoyed ourselves. I enjoyed being Captain, thank you to my team for listening and trying their best. Everyone played their part to win the game, it was a brilliant performance.
