Honours Boards

Special mention to Joel Colbran on his maiden century on Saturday . What is particularly noteworthy is that this was Joel’s first game in over 7 years – fantastic effort Joel – well done 👏👏👏

A special mention also to Josh Dixon for his match winning 5 for 26 against Horsham Trinity. Every Friday evening Josh reminds us that he is going to take 5 wickets on Saturday – and he certainly did on Saturday. Looking forward to many more Fifer’s this season Joshy ..

Congratulations to Joel Colbran on his maiden ton on Saturday

Congratulations to all those who made it on to the Honours Boards this week

Parking on Friday evening

We are receiving an increasing volume of complaints from local residents about parking during Junior training on a Friday evening. These complaints are related to inconsiderate parking where local residents cannot access their homes or where parking causes danger to other motorists due to restricted vision or reduced space for safe passing.

With this in mind we would like to move all parking away from around the village playground, Wyatt Close and Butts Meadow and towards the Village Hall car park where there are 10 spaces and Songhurst Meadow car park where there are 14 spaces. These two additional car parking areas are close to the Green as clearly marked on the map below

If it is possible to walk or share lifts to the Green then please do.

We very much appreciate your help in improving the parking situation on a Friday evening for the benefit of you and the local residents.

Match reports

First X1 vs Horsham Trinity First X1

The first team travelled away to ‘The Trin’, another scorcher of a Saturday.

With availability still a struggle for the Green, we filled the side with both youth and experience.  Horsham were a very young side with one older chap, a slightly familiar face, but that could be said for 3 sides in 3 years now… more to follow on this.

The Wicket was a tad green, the surroundings familiar, the smells at their finest. Farmer won the toss and elected to field.

Jnr and Hugo were the same opening pair and both bowled well, finding a bit of movement, and causing a few early issues for the Trin batsmen; it was Hugo who struck first a bit thick outside edge, taken well by Will Crombie behind the stumps.   Patel came in and was in the mood to put the bad ball away, he hit one into the air and, as Hugo had his eyes on the ball, managed to run straight into the batsmen at the other end who had somehow managed to go to where the ball was heading, but was also attempting a single… anyway he didn’t last too much longer as he hit a fine shot over cover, only for Juan to fly around to his left and take a wonderful catch.  29/2 and the perfect start for the Green.

Next in was Chris Douglas, striding out to the crease with Jessie J’s Worldwide number 1 playing in the background….

Chris was coming off back-to-back centuries and in fine form.  He played some lovely shots through mid wicket early, with his fellow opener Moir playing sensibly and punishing any bad balls. The scoring was moving to around 80 when Captain Farmer decided it was time, Chris probably licking his lips for another century, but, just like that, a loud nick threw to Will Crombie who was standing up, and cue the celebrations.  Dejected, knowing that forever he was Farmer’s victim, Chris trudged off the pitch.   Luckily for him, the Frogbox recording was not working at that moment, otherwise it would have been on the local news station… Wolfie bowled in Wolfie fashion and provided the only Maiden of the innings, but sadly did not have any luck/reward for his overs.

The middle overs were then dominated by Trinity:  Moir, the opener, getting to his first league 50. (Wis seem to be nice at letting players get to milestones atm).  Joey Calder Smith came on and bowled two Jaffas to then remove both the set batsmen, and the score was on 146/4.   Trinity Captain and ex-footy teammate of Joey’s, Gandy (not Mahatma) came to the crease in assured fashion. He struck what turned out to be a great innings of 87 off just 47 balls. Taking advantage of the straight short boundaries. He was finally removed after a flurry of boundaries, the safe hands of Juan under the high ball.

The final score ended on 282/6 off the 40 overs.

Tea was taken, well lack of tea for some. The local Co-Op, and Jenny Jones’ chicken wraps were devoured, and Wis sent off with the same opening pair, hoping for similar results as round one. But, as Nick Klein predicted, two in a row would be tough  The team had faith but after Nick hit one like a tracer bullet, the fielder looked into his hands, and, as if by shock couldn’t believe he had held on.   Raucous celebrations.

Will Crombie was in no mood to hang about and tucked into anything short or wide, batting with fluency. We thought he lost a couple of balls but no ball is ever gone with Wolfie in the side; he was passed a cricket ball that was like for like, took a quick sniff, and headed into the bushes. Within two minutes he had found it, deep in the depths of Trinity’s bushes. If anyone has ever had the honour to have to look for balls at this ground, the dog bins that are everywhere will give you a clue as to what you can smell.

The change of bowling did for him, as the seam bowling of Deane managed to keep one fairly low and hit him in front of middle. The doomed figure of Mattock, stayed still for his customary 10 seconds, before a nod of the head, and the finger of doom arose.  77/3 as Tarnie had fallen just before.  James Rainford and Ollie Warmington then had the job of re-building, and they started to do it well.   Jnr tried skipping down to the spinner, only to york himself and be bowled.  133/4, and Wis were in a bit of a hole.   Warmington continued well, and reached a wonderful 50.   Farmer trying to support picked off the bad ball, but it was the tricky spinner Patel who was his downfall for a well made 51  Wis were 181/5.  With 12 an over required, Farmer still had plans of repeating his opposition skipper, but failed, only skewing down to third man and being caught – the sort of chances that flew to the boundary for Trinity.

The tail wagged well, with solid contributions from both Hugo March and Harry Hunter, but Wis fell 50 runs short, Gandy’s innings prevailing to be the difference.  Lots again to take into the home fixture against West Wittering, but plenty to work on in the nets. With lots of our younger players now back from revision and exams, hopefully a win is not far away for the Green.

Second X1 vs Horsham Trinity Second X1

To the naked eye, Saturday was a quintessential English summers day. The sun shone, the sky was blue, cricket was enjoyed on the Green, interrupted only by the delicious tea, ripples of gentle applause and a mesmerising golden hour as the sun drifted towards its glowing slumber.

How wrong could we be? There was nothing English about Saturday. Nothing at all.

There was nothing to grumble about.
No complaining.
No dignified stoicism,
No, “oh well there’s always next time.”
No ripping defeat from the jaws of victory.
No loss to Germany on penalties,
No heroic failure.
None of that.

In fact, I reckon we would have been in Australia. A ruthless, professional cricketing performance from the Twos. Dazzling performances with bat and ball, and in the field, team spirit in abundance and spiritually at least, a deep attachment, love and respect for the Green. 30 points in the bag, great debuts from new players, fitting success from returning ones, a growing sense of spirit, fun and enjoyment from all the squad.

Some highlights:
Won the toss and batted. Debuts for Josh Raper, Steve Talman – both quality players, welcome to the Club. Welcome back to Mark Brown and Joel Colbran.
Runs (finally) for the Captain. Impressive flurry from Raper and George Nicholls.
Imperious hundred from Colbran, who deserves all the plaudits.
Selfless slogging from Brown and Talman.
200 strike rate for Josh Braddock.
238-5 at the break.

In the field, we were sharp, chatty and energetic throughout.

Joshy Dixon, after batting heroics last week, did extreme Josh Dixon things – 9 overs, 5 for 24. BOOM (including a one-handed c&b and a wicket off the last ball of the the spell to get 5). Is there ANYTHING that he can’t do?

Harry Maggs and Josh Braddock bowled tight lines and always looked threatening.
Josh B was a ball of energy noise and encouragement in the field – epic.
Phil Maggs – Mr reliable – nothing flash, took crucial wicket.
Catching – Mark Brown set the tone early with a screamer, Louis followed with one that had snow on it, Colbran took one he NO rights to whatsoever (in front of the Club President. Accident..? I don’t think so.)
Sharp direct hit from Phil Maggs to get rid of their danger man.
HTCC 138 all out in 30 overs.

There’s something brewing in the group. We all want the club to succeed, we’re enjoying our cricket. Watch this space. Now, to keep the momentum and string some wins together. Bit more Aussie, bit less English. At all times, Wizzy Green.

Under 14 vs Horsham Trinity

Match report by Buddy Edwardes (age 14 )

We started off the sunny day with Wisborough winning the toss and Buddy, who was captain chose to put the boys in to bat after getting some handy information from Phil Maggs after the Seconds game the day before.

Will Spiers walked on with partner in crime Josh Braddock as they got us off to the best start possible with Will smashing 40 runs. After Will retired, entered the on form Harry Maggs who was hoping to repeat his batting ways from the week before. However his innings sadly fell short as he got out to a blinder of a ball.

Towards the end of the innings our debutant Jack Radford came in and had an unforgettable innings with his new bat.

We batted incredibly well but now onto the bowling.

Hector Dawson opened the bowling from the Ken Vickery end bowling a phenomenal spell as usual. Then wickets flourished as Harry Maggs bowled great figures securing our first wicket and Buddy Edwardes came on taking 2 quick wickets with a superb catch from our debutant Ashwin. The bowling finished on a high as we comfortably won with big celebrations after 🎉

Girls Under 13 vs Haywards Heath

On Tuesday 20th May the WGCC U13 girls cricket team met with Haywards Heath at home for the second time in two weeks, eager to improve on the performance from the week before, although there is never any shortage of fun and comradery with the girls at WGCC!

For the second time running we won the toss and chose to field first. Molly as captain took the team onto the field putting all players in their optimum positions showing great preparation and leadership – she asked for heals on the boundary in readiness for some big hitters that had caused us problems the week before.

Lucy kicked off the bowling and as always was straight and sure, she went onto bowl another three excellent overs throughout the game. Nearly all the team had a chance to bowl including Alice, Cameron, Eva S, Lola, Masie, Molly and Eva T. Eva T was on fire with her bowling and took two wickets in the one over, impressing the oppo, the coach and the team with her determination and accuracy given she is one of the youngest members of the team. In the field, Katie and Anaya kept guard of the off side and Eva T stopped a few balls going over the boundary line as she backed up the wicket keeper Lola. The fielding was good, and we need to continue to practise using our long barriers, so the ball does not creep through legs!

It came time to bat and sadly both Alice and Lucy were out first and second ball, which was disappointing given they had delivered some bit hits against very fast bowlers. Then came the batting pair of the evening Anaya and Lola who held off fast bowler after fast bowler, taking over 60 runs between them, a tremendous effort. All but one of the team had a chance to bat, however a very fast bowling and accurate team got he better of our less experienced batters.

The final score 104-163 to Haywards Heath. We got a wonderful note of thanks from their coaches, complementing us on our excellent attitude, team spirit and delicious tea. Our next match will be on 3rd June away against Horsham. Thanks must go to all the parent helpers for setting up and packing down the pitch and the tea table, to Peter for umpiring, Roshan for scoring and to the girls for their positive attitude and kindness toward one another, the photos say it all!

Smiles all round after a great evenings cricket on the Green

Under 12 vs Horsham Trinity

Match report by Callum Cambell-Yaxley (age 12)

We played Horsham Trinity U12s at their ground in Horsham, where the sun was blazing and the atmosphere was incredible.

To start off we won the toss and chose to bowl as we thought chasing would be easier than setting. We had great bowling from everyone, taking 6 wickets in total. A great performance for our second game. Our wicket takers were:
James I
Callum I
Bobby I
Dylan I
Eddie II
…with one of Eddie’s wickets being a beautiful catch from Archie sliding along the grass.

At the end of the first innings, Horsham Trinity had made 147 runs which was a great score. We would have to take our opportunities if we wanted to catch them.

It was our turn to bat. The opposition had some amazing bowlers bowling extremely fast and they had a sneaky spin bowler who was extremely hard to hit. Our top scorer was Bobby Ayling with 7 runs, with Jayden and Charlie also scoring well with excellent strike rates.

In the end we got 45 runs all out but we were proud of ourselves as we gave our all against a fierce opponent. They won the game but we played our hearts out so everyone should give themselve’s a pat on the back.

Overall we learnt from a tough defeat and we all had a good time and I’m sure we are all looking forward to our next match against Fletching.

Under 10 vs Cuckfield

Match report by George Hardy (age 10)

We played against Cuckfield. The weather was cold at first but it warmed up as we played. Unfortunately, Cuckfield won, but it was a good game and Wisborough Green played well as a team.

Cuckfield won the toss and chose to bat first. Thomas bowled first and took a wicket in the first over. Henry bowled next followed by Jack B and then Jack H. Gus did a good job in the 12th over, bowling out one of their batsmen. Henry did a lovely catch on Jack H’s bowl. Cuckfield hit their own stumps, and Leo bowled someone out. Cooper bowled really well.

Henry and I batted first. We got six 4’s as the first pair. I thought we got a six, but it counted as a 4. Jack H and Jack B where the second pair and they held on against some fast bowlers. Cooper and Gus were the third pair and leaving Leo and Thomas to end our batting. Well done to Thomas who got man of the match.

Cuckfield got 316 runs and we got 249 runs. Unfortunately, there were no biscuits, but we shared snacks and drinks around.

I really enjoyed being Captain. I found out that warming up really helps you play better in the match. Also, when fielding make sure there are no big gaps between your players.

Lastly, a big thank you to all the parents and our coach Peter.

George Hardy – Captain

Another fantastic morning’s cricket in the sunshine for our under 10’s – well done boys

…and finally – spotted out and about …

That’s it for this week.

If there is anything we need to know you know where to find us

Have a great cricketing week 🏏😊

Cheers
