RunWisborough

A fantastic village event on Sunday – many thanks to the RunWisborough Committee and Michelle Kilford and Martin Lonsdale in particular for all their efforts.

The organisers wanted to say a special thank you to everyone that took part on the day – to all the marshals, the volunteers, our sponsors and of course the lovely villagers for coming out and cheering the runners on.

Match reports

First X1 vs Worthing

A frustrating washout!

• A tricky lead up with the forecast looking terrible all week and then our inspirational umpire Mattock taken out of action meaning plans were flexed – but we were hoping to sneak past the weather and with Rob Knight standing in for Peter we were hoping to get a game in
• Things started well by winning the toss and we elected to have a bowl
• Things quickly got better when Junior got two quick wickets in his first over – bowled one and the other sharply caught by Crombie at second slip
• The second over things got even better when Hugo recorded a maiden – a first for this season!
• Worthing were 2-2 – could we pull off a quick one
• Worthing’s number 4 had other ideas when a decent nick behind was taken by DJ – but with the batsman standing firm (true Saffa style)
• Him and the attacking Renai started building and got Worthing to 67 before Junior struck again
• Sizzey and Joey joined the attack with the former getting better every over picking up two towards the end of his spell and the latter also getting a nice brace
• Crombie and Klein, a deadly combination with bat and ball, picked up the last 3 wickets and Worthing were 195 all out
• Green wanted a quick turnaround knowing the rain was coming but umpires refused
• Crombie and Klien opened the batting and destructively struck 34 before the rain came down hard
• Unfortunately the rain only got heavier – fun conditions to pack away after 20 points slipped through our fingers
• Dick of the day goes to Hugo for the wild celebrations in the pav after finding out his season economy was below 10 for the season!

On to Bognor away!

Second X1 vs Kiln Vale

Sometime pre-1741 I can imagine that I find looking, well dressed bunch of young and not so old men gathered on the patch of English country idyll that they found themselves living and declared that they shall for a Cricket Club. Horatio, the Lord of the Manor, alongside Caleb the farrier. John (son of John) the farmer. William, village vicar. They pulled up their britches, adjusted their neckerchiefs and whacked leather with willow before retiring to the (newly names) Cricketers Tavern, for mead and ale. And repeat, for generations upon generations. And now we have Jonny, the Jester. Thomas, the entrepreneur. Stephen, the village teacher. Daniel, the village accountant. Thus the fabric of the club, the traditions behind it and the long history of success and grown and flourished – old and young, joining together.

And so it must have been in Kilnwood Vale, another (newer) village a few years back. The village (!) elders gathered together with the aim of creating a club for the playing of the marvellous game of cricket. The club grows, it joins a league. It puts out a team. It wins a few matches. And then it doesn’t. And a few people leave. And then the club is in danger of folding. People don’t want to play for a losing team. It’s not fun.

So, dear reader. Why do I tell you this? The seconds went to play KV on Saturday. We won a rain shortened 2020 game. Steve and Harry batted beautifully to bring home the bacon. 30 points in the bag. But the sadder news was the greeting by the captain at the toss. “I don’t really care about the result today. I just want to keep the club afloat”. My point is that we’re lucky to play at WGCC. We have a brilliant club spirit and genuine enthusiasm for the game. Just like the founders envisaged sometime pre-1741. Think of Kilnwood Vale. One fewer club means fewer people enjoying the game. Let’s all hope that they pull through.
