Match reports
First X1 vs Worthing
Relegation 60 pointer
- Vickery won the toss and decided to chase – looking for a 4th win on the road chasing this season
- Jr and Willbo opened and were initially unlucky – thick edges and wind distractions meant Worthing piled on some runs early
- Willbo picked up a wicket and Worthing were 42-1
- Vickery, in an inspirational move, ripped Jr out of the attack and replaced him with DG
- the bowling change paid off as DG claimed the wicket of the dangerous Gransult – caught by junior at midwicket
- Jr replaced Willbo at the other end and worked his way to a very nice 3 wickets
- At drinks Worthing were 95-3, a promising start for Worthing and Green needed to drive for more wickets
- After DG managed a full 8 overs bowling with good control and picking up 2 wickets – on came Wolfie who took a brilliant 4 for 22 off 5 overs, including a comedy caught and balled
- Worthing finished on 151 all out
- a good tea was had, Tommy happy to have some plain ham sandwiches!
- Vickery and Klein opened the batting to try and get a start fast
- Klein batted well for a quick 18 whereas Vickery didn’t really contribute, both departed quickly and WG were 24-2
- Tommy and Willbo began the game winning partnership – a patient 97 run partnership before Tommy departed for 27
- Willbo fell with only 23 needed and the game was pretty much done – other than gifting Worthing an extra point it was job done by Willbo and Tommy
- Ritchie and Talman finished it for Wisborough with a few lists blows
- 30 points and out of the relegation zone

Second X1 vs Kilnwood Vale
With the skipper fancying a chase he was delighted when the coin landed on tails and swiftly put Kilnwood Vale into bat. The 2s had an exciting line up of Junior players in the side and Harvey Bartholomew (U15), who is a new recruit to senior cricket, opened the bowling down the hill with the ever consistent and economical Harry Maggs (U14) doing the honours up the hill. Neither batsmen looked entirely comfortable although they were making runs until Harvey struck with an absolute peach hitting the top of off with one that cut in. Harvey struck again with Mark Brown taking a good catch to remove the other opener.
Phil Maggs was then summoned to bowl down the hill which he did very effectively removing their strike batsman with one that moved in to hit middle and off. Frank Vickey bowled up the hill with not much luck and during this period the Kilnwood batsmen started to get on top (and we dropped a few catches). Phil continued in good form to bag another 2 wickets one of which was made by an outstanding catch from his son Harry out on the boundary where he bravely slid to the ball catching it in his stomach (ouch) whilst securing it with his hands – very impressive stuff!
The Kilnwood Vale left-hander, who had been recruited to play the day before by their Captain whilst in the nets, proved to be a difficult man to get out. Josh D took out the tail from up the hill and ended up with decent figures of 4 for 36 off 9 overs. Josh Braddock (U14) finally got the left hander out LBW and they were all out for 237 after 38 overs. This was a chasable total on a good batting strip.
Wisborough started positively helped by some erratic bowling with Tarni and Alex Martin opening and we were at 28 runs after 3 overs. Soon afterwards Tarni played on (enormously frustratingly as the ball hit inside edge, front bad, back pad and then off stump – aaaaaargh).
Alex and Phil were striking the ball well and continuing to score quickly until Alex missed a sweep shot which hit his pad and was given LBW. Mark joined the crease and got a good one from Leroy (their wily left-arm spinner) to also be given LBW. This is when the talent and patience of the Junior players started with Josh B playing beautifully against Leroy. Phil was batting with confidence and looked like he could be out there all afternoon until he hit one directly to the man on the square leg boundary. Dave came and went quickly as a miscommunication conspired against him (Dave called yes to his glance to square leg – Josh did not hear and then sent him back to be easily run out).
The gifted Juniors continued with Buddy Edwards (U14) coming to the crease as Josh was caught out and Frank bowled – we were now 96 for 7. Buddy and Harry then built an incredibly mature partnership keeping the good balls out and attacking the bad balls to continue to nudge the score forward. Unfortunately Buddy succumbed going for a bit shot which was caught on the boundary and the score was now at 123 for 8.
Harry and Harvey then set about building another impressive partnership with some stunning shots along the way. Harry was finally caught after a very well crafted 35 runs – the highest score from our No. 9 – very well done. Harvey looked good and was unbeaten on 9 runs after Josh D spooned one up to mid-off to end the match on 158 all out after 33 overs.
We could have won that if he had held our catches – very well done to all the Juniors who played – you all did so well.

Under 12 vs Fletching
Match report by Kayden Wright (age 12) – Captain
Great game on Saturday the 9th of August we played Fletching at home and gave them challenging game. I am not sure if we have played them before as I joined late in the season but they are a very good team.
Unfortunately we lost the toss but got what we wanted to do first anyway to bowl the reason I would of chosen to bowl is because we could see how many runs we would need and really push to win. I think we were a bit sleepy to start with but after the 10th over we got our first wicket with a brilliant diving catch by Jack and we started to be more lively and ended up getting three more wickets me and Leo both got three overs to bowl and bowled really well but unfortunately weren’t able to get past the batsmen but I think we put a really good shift into batting and were unfortunate not to get the win.
Jack played very well to get past the retirement stage which is why I thought he should be the man of the match.

Under 11 Intra Club friendly
Match report by Ethan Cooke (age 11) – Captain of Ethan’s team
LAST BALL DRAMA AT INTER CLUB FRIENDLY
Seb won the toss and decided to bowl and field first. The first pair, who were Charlie and Leo, scored a joint score of 42 off 4 overs and there was a big six from Charlie! Next, Charlie Baxter (one of our under 10’s) and Cai had a great bat in the middle.
Due to Arthur not being able to get there by the time of the third pair, Reuben P moved up to bat with another one of our under 10’s Finley and both did really well, especially with the bowlers they were facing! By now we were on 102 runs through three pairs!!
Jack and Ben had an extraordinary time in the middle, especially Jack scoring 23 runs. To end, me and Arthur finished strong (apart from a few wickets) but we had got a great score of 346 runs!!!
So the target was to keep them under 346. Myself and Jack started off extraordinarily, I only went for 2 runs off my overs and Jack was bowling on the wickets loads. Charlie and Finley were second to take on the bouncy middle and did amazingly keeping it really tight.
Reuben and Cai were next and were amazing making sure there were no gaps for them to take runs, and after a Duckworth Lewis adjustment we were going to have to work really hard in order to win the game.
Arthur and Ben were bowling superbly, especially Ben getting 3 wickets, but then disaster struck… Charlie got injured and had to come off so we needed a wicket keeper, so as skipper I stepped up. Charlie Baxter was up next with Leo and they both had the pressure of not going for many runs and they did an amazing job and the other team needed 2 off the last ball…
Leo bowled the last ball and it was a peach but they hit it and our hearts stopped, but they ran for 2 and we ran them out to win the game!
What a game, so proud of all the boys, I asked them for their all and they all gave it everything “energy in the field” “wicket ball”!
Well done to all but especially the under 10’s joining the match and to Charlie Baxter for being player of the team!
Couldn’t be a prouder captain
Thank you

Match report by Seb Palmer (age 11) – Captain of Seb’s team
I was captain and won the toss and elected to field.
We were up against a skilled opposition who maximised run opportunities while facing our bowlers.
We took a total of six wickets – well done to Ollie for taking two, James two, and I was especially proud of Cooper (our under 10 player) for taking two wickets also!
After a lovely tea we were going to be chasing 345.
We batted steadily and conceded five wickets…. James and I were the final batting pair, and un-be-known to us our score had been altered to show we were within touching distance of a win.
Things were tense, and we rose to the occasion in the half light and so did the opposition!
We managed to rack up run after run. The last ball of the match came quickly and we only needed one run to win… I hit the ball cleanly deep into the outfield, and off James and I sped. One run done, we’ve won we thought, then we thought we’d get another… The ball was thrown in at the wicket end James was running towards… it was going to be very, very close… James dived but was skilfully stumped out!
Sadly, we’d lost, but I was really pleased with how my team had played, and was very proud to be captain for the evening, and for being awarded man of the match by the opposing team.
A great time was had by all, and I think I can say we’ve all really enjoyed this season!

Under 10 friendly vs Storrington
Match report by Thomas Dowling (age 10) – Captain
Friday night was one of those perfect evenings for cricket – sunny skies, no wind and everyone in a good mood. We were away at Storrington, a team we hadn’t played before and I was really excited because I got to captain the team. Even better, we won the toss and decided to bowl first. That way, we’d know what target we had to beat.
From the very first over, it was clear we were ready. Barnaby opened the bowling and got us off to a flying start with not one but two wickets! That really set the tone for the evening. Then Seth came on and kept the pressure going. He took a wicket too and then Finlay got a lovely run out. Cooper took a fantastic catch off another one and then Seth struck again with a smart run out. His throw was one of the highlights of the match!
George bowled next and took a wicket with his very first ball… and then another with his second! Two wickets in two balls! Everyone was cheering and high-fiving. Cooper bowled well, barely giving away any runs and then I was up next and Leo, who was brilliant as wicket keeper, stumped one of their players out. Charlie bowled next and another player was stumped again by Leo. Next it was Seth again, who got a wicket from his second outing. Leo then gave up wicket keeping duty to bowl and Finlay got a run out from his solid effort.
Later on, George bowled again and I took a nice catch off his great work. Jack came on and bowled really well, keeping their runs down. Then Finlay was next and I got a memorable run out. Henry kept the pressure up with his bowling and then Leo and I took another turn with the ball. Leo got a clean catch off Cooper’s bowling near the end. It really felt like everyone was involved. Charlie, Finlay, Henry and Barnaby finished off the innings with solid bowling performances. Honestly, I think it was the best we’ve ever fielded and bowled as a team. We worked together, backed each other up and gave it everything.
At halftime, we had juice and biscuits – bourbons, digestives and jammy dodgers. Then we regrouped and Peter gave us some good tactical advice before we went out to bat.
Finlay and Henry opened our innings and gave us the perfect start. Finlay smashed three fours and Henry hit two – it was a really solid partnership. Then Leo and Barnaby came in and Leo was amazing – he hit five boundaries and Barnaby added two more.
After that, Charlie and Seth continued the attack. Charlie hit two cracking fours and Seth was just as strong, hitting three. We were building a big total and everyone was really focused.
Jack and Cooper batted next – Jack smashed one straight past the fielder for four and Cooper added two more. The final pair, George and I, came up against some really fast and accurate bowling, but we held our own. George finished the innings with a brilliant four and that just wrapped everything up perfectly.
When the final runs were added up, we’d scored 335 and they had 180. That meant we won by 155 runs! Everyone was buzzing and we all celebrated with our coach and our families on the sidelines.
The other team chose Seth as the Man of the Match, which was really well deserved. He bowled amazingly and that throw to hit the stumps was just awesome.
It’s a night we’ll remember for a long time.
