Wisborough Green vs Kenya Kongolis

A Wisborough Green invitation X1 took on the visiting Kenya Kongolis side on Wednesday 31 July. The Kenya Kongolis are players who currently live in Kenya, who have lived in Kenya, or have some association with Kenya. This year the Kongolis sponsored a player from Kenya to join them on their tour , and it was a real pleasure to welcome Tony to Wisborough Green.

Many of the Kenya Kongolis players have been playing in the annual fixture for over 30 years. Pictured below against the backdrop of one of the neighbouring houses are skipper David Waters and Chris Maille who played in the game 30 years ago to the day. The house hasn’t changed one bit in all that time … What incredible memories ….

Back – from left — Hughie Ragg, Sam Johnson, Hector Monro, skipper Tom Malcolm, Joey Calder Smith and James Rainford. Front left – Joe Bonney, Richard Wilson, Gracie Attridge, Harry Dancaster, Josh Dixon, front Harry Hunter

A fantastic game of cricket – played in the true spirit of the game.

Put into bat first – the Kongolis amassed a total of 201 in their timed 37 over innings. A great century from their opener and some good bowling from Wisborough Green’s Tom Malcolm leading from the front, Hector Monro, Joey Calder Smith, Hughie Ragg and Josh Dixon. Excellent line and length bowling from Gracie Attridge , Harry Hunter and spin merchant Richard Wilson.

Wisborough Green batters fell a few runs short of the total – but some brilliant classic cover drives from Harry Dancaster, top scoring from skipper Tom Malcolm , hard hitting from Joey Calder Smith and Hughie Ragg, some deft touches from James Rainford, well placed edges from Josh Dixon and a very welcome return to the crease for Sam Johnson and Hector Monro , both of whom have been missed !!

It is always a pleasure to host the Kongolis – and we look forward to the fixture again next year.
