20 June : The Wisborough Green Sports Club Association AGM 2017 is taking place in the pavilion at 9pm on Wednesday 20th June. This is a significant year for the Sports Association, a change of Chairman, the new pavilion development, and a new structure creating a Charitable Incorporated Organisation enabling fund raising and tax saving opportunities. Everyone who has registered with the Cricket Club, which includes parents of the Colts, are automatically members of the Sports association and are invited (and encouraged ) to attend the AGM       The circus is coming to Town Friday 15 June – Sunday 17 June    click here for details

First X1 vs Southwater 

Following one victory and one defeat away from home, the First XI finally played some cricket at home, early-season pace setters Southwater the visitors on Saturday. Skipper Jim Sadler again won the toss, but this time elected to field first, in what proved to be a wise decision. The afternoon began eventfully. After left-hander Nick Baker had struck Ben Thatcher for three off-side boundaries in the second over, one skewed just over extra-cover, Southwater skipper Alex Harding, having faced two very tight overs from James Rainford, was bowled by the final ball of the second of these, attempting an extravagant leg-side stroke to a ball of full length which struck off and middle stumps. Baker, attempting another bold stroke, was also bowled by Ben in the following over and, when the same bowler dismissed James Drew, to a sharp low catch at gully from Jamie Self, Southwater were 24 for 3. Following Thursday’s deluge, the track was a little trickier to bat on than a standard Wisborough surface, but the experienced pairing of South African Johann Brouwer and Matt Lacey dug in determinedly, sharing a partnership of 71 for the fourth wicket. Brouwer survived several close shouts for l.b.w and twice chopped deliveries perilously close to leg stump, but was quick to punish the loose deliveries, finding the boundary nine times. Lacey was more painstaking in his approach and generally scored his runs behind the wicket. Jamie Self made the breakthrough, in the 26th over, trapping Brouwer l.b.w. one short of his half-century with a ball that kept slightly low. A period of very tight control from Jamie and Jonny Farmer followed, the total at one stage only increasing by 28 in 16 overs. Jamie eventually dismissed Lacey (31), caught-behind by D.J. Dominique, Jonny claiming two victims either side of this, Berriman caught at slip by Chris Plaister and Hogan bowled. Jonny was also responsible for the run out of Young, the batsman beaten by Jonny’s direct hit after Shuttlewood had called for a very tight single, having pushed the ball just onto the leg-side. Shuttlewood was a lively presence at Number 9, striking Jonny twice over his head, once for four and once for six, but was left stranded on 24 not out, with Jack Sizzey-Carter taking wickets in each of his first two overs, Skett smartly caught, low down, by Chris at slip and Tillier chipping a gentle catch to Ben at point. Southwater were all out for 143 in the 45th over, Jamie and Jonny (both 2 for 39, from 15 and 13 overs respectively) the stand-out performers in an impressive all-round bowling display. Although batting conditions had certainly now improved, there was a considerable gulf between the quality of both the batting and the bowling of the two sides, and there were very few alarms in reaching our target. Jim’s first-choice pairing, Byron Napper and Chris Plaister, opened together for the first time and registered our first half-century stand of the season. With Byron happy to concentrate mainly on tight defence, Chris was much the more aggressive, unfurling a series of sweetly-timed off-side strokes in moving swiftly to 40. However, with the total 53, having flirted with the possibility of being caught at extra-cover on a couple of occasions, he lifted a simple chance to mid-off from the generally profligate slow bowling of Brouwer. Byron’s innings now increased in tempo, most of his scoring on the leg-side and, as is his wont, along the ground. Although he was almost run out, after a mix-up with Jordan Bell, he generally looked in little danger, and it was a surprise when he edged Harding to slip. 84 for 2, Byron out for 30. After two low scores at Arundel and Chippingdale, OSP Mark Day must have been nervous, although he was soon into his stride, driving his first ball to the extra-cover boundary and turning a full toss to the square-leg boundary later in the over. With the match now heading inexorably in our favour, Mark and Jordan acquired runs at a rapid rate. The latter offered an exceptionally sharp, and unlikely, caught-and-bowled chance to Brouwer, from a savage drive. Later he cracked a short ball from the same bowler onto the branches of a tree at mid-wicket, narrowly preventing significant damage to the car just behind it. Mark mixed some textbook defence with breezy strokes either side of the wicket before, having made 32 and certainly having suggested the potential for major contributions during the season, he pushed Harding to extra-cover, with the target only 10 runs away. Jordan, whose 36 not out continued his fine start to the season, scored all of these runs in the following over, victory completed with 17 of them to spare. A very fine team performance, with bat and ball and in the field, arguably the best I have seen in my time with the club. It was important to bounce back after the Chippingdale defeat, and the team did so in emphatic fashion. A visit to bottom side Steyning II is the next assignment although, alas, apparently with a much-weakened line-up; a chance for others to make their mark. Peter Mattock 

Seconds vs Southwater 

With the forecast changing minute by minute in the days leading up to the local derby v Southwater 2nd XI, Wisborough we’re greeted by a peach of day, with a gentle breeze sliding across the wicket. On inspection, the wicket was green on top and relatively soft, so looked like a good one to bowl on, especially with a potent ‘Borough bowling attack on standby. The stand in skipper, Chris ‘Carol’ Francis won the toss and elected to take to the field. Although conditions favoured the natural swing of Stu ‘Magoo/Beamer’ Rainford down the hill and Hugo ‘Book Worm’ March up the hill, the youthful Book Worm didn’t want to expel any more calories than necessary, needing all the energy possible for his GCSE revision sessions by candlelight, and therefore fancied a trundle down the hill. Magoo put in a good session up the Wisborough hill the previous week, and therefore the skipper gave into the youngster’s whimperings. The first few overs were won by Southwater, with some loose deliveries bowled by both Book Worm and Magoo being dispatched to the boundary by the Southwater openers. Book Worm soon struck though, removing danger man Humphries and the number 3 in quick succession, both bowled. Magoo soon got amongst the wickets too. Frustrating the Southwater number 4, the batsman stuck one high into the blue summers sky only to be pouched by Carol, much to the amazement of all, including himself, as he had shelled 100% of catching opportunities season to date. Magoo and Book Worm kept the remaining overs of their 6 over spells tight, and gave ‘Borough a promising start. Martin ‘Hoppo/4 Plates’ Hopkins and Tommy ‘Gun’ Colbran were next to be let loose on the Southwater batting order. Hoppo was quick to set about the Southwater line up, tickling the timbers of the middle order on 3 occasions, with his 4th wicket caught. It was a great spell by Hoppo, which strangled the middle part of Southwater innings with figures of 4-23 off his 9 over spell. Gun was slightly slower to start, lofting up some powder puffs in his first over for the dangerous Southwater number 5 to moo to the leg side. After a few chunterings of ‘I hate cricket’, Gun, started to bowl flatter and with more ‘revs’ on the ball, which the Southwater batsmen struggled to deal with. Gun got his just desserts, when the Southwater skipper prodded one to the covers, with Joey ‘Collateral’ Calder Smith taking a good catch low down. With Southwater reeling, the opening pair of Magoo and Book Worm finished off the tail enders with another wicket each. Book Worm took the 9th wicket with a smart catch by Dan Vickery in gully. Magoo was possibly slightly lucky to get a chance of taking his 2nd wicket of the match after a 2nd well placed beamer. After this slight scare, he found his length again and few balls later polished off the innings with a caught behind by Callum ‘The Cat’ Price. Southwater totted up 126 in the 31 overs batted, which was very chase-able on this early season wicket. There were some lovely offerings at half time, which included pizza, coronation chicken sandwiches, Eng v Pak on one screen, and the Rugby Premiership league final on the other screen. After tea, ‘Borough went about the chase, with Carol taking 1 and Ken ‘Grey Bear/Grear’ Vickery taking 2. It wasn’t long before Carol was back in the hutch, adjudged LBW for 5. This brought Dan ‘Cub of Grear’ Vickery to the crease. Suckling at the teat of Grear for advice on which way round to hold the cricket bat, having not batted since 2016, he looked steady in the security of the older, more dominant male 22 yards away. With Grear punishing the bad balls to the boundary, or turning 3’s into 1’s, the innings was paced well. After rotating the strike well, the younger male looked to assert his dominance, only to be tamed by a caught and bowled for 7. Steve ‘Man of Leisure’ Calder Smith was in at 4. The Chairman, who had earlier done his fair share of sprinting to the boundary in the 1st innings, still had plenty in the tank in the 2nd innings. Classy shots ensued as he nosed ‘Borough closer to the finish line, but unfortunately got on to one a bit early, and was unfortunate to find a fielder. SCS out caught for a promising 17. Grear soon followed too. Having punished the bad ball to offside boundary so well to this point in the innings, the tiring, thirsty Grear, thought he’d mix things up a little. With a swing across the line full of intent, the ball missed the wielded blade of Grear only to hit middle peg. Top knock of 40. Collateral and 4 Plates came in 5 and 6 and were left with approximately 40 for the win. With younger legs at the crease, the handbrake had been released on running between the wickets. With Joey steering the ball around the ground well and Hoppo tucking into anything astray, the 2 of them finished off the innings with chance-less knocks to chase down the Southwater 126 in 30 overs. It really was a complete performance by the team to take home maximum points. The fielding was tight, with only one easy chance being put down, and some good catches taken in the process. All 4 bowlers bowled extremely well, with each of them taking wickets. Callum kept well as always, conceding only 2 byes. Thank you Jimmy ‘J Dog’ Francis for stepping up today with a bad back, and putting in a solid shift in the field. I was really pleased with how we batted today too. Although we got away with a couple put down by Southwater, there seems to be a new found confidence with the bat this year, which has been instilled by our leader NSP, with players looking to go out there with intent to hit the bad ball. Thanks also to Peter and Lesley for doing the umpiring and scoring. It makes a captain’s life a lot easier on the day and is very much appreciated. On arrival to the pav, a lovely BBQ and Paella was provided by Jim, Sammy, Sami, Emma and Farms, which allowed for some well earned celebrations into the night, as long as you didn’t support Liverpool. Thank you for a great spread. With holidays and stag do’s aplenty this coming Saturday, those who are available to play, please make yourselves known to Jim and NSP, so that we can continue our strong start to the season. Under 16’s vs Horsham

Firstly welcome back to the under 16’s and a very warm welcome to our new player Ben Hill   The team got a much delayed season underway with a mixed performance against Horsham on Sunday with some early season rust on show. After a steady start on a slow pitch, Wisborough began to up the run rate but at the cost of a regular loss of wickets. Leon Kilford contributed some valuable runs as anchorman to the innings, and Tom Colbran led from the front with an excellent forty including some lusty six-hitting. But a cataclysmic over saw three wickets fall in five balls as Wisborough emulated their England international counterparts with a mid-innings collapse, and with Tom falling shortly afterwards, the innings limped to a close at 83 all out with fewer than 20 of the 25 overs used, and no fewer than five batsmen failing to trouble the scorebook. Chasing such a modest total, Horsham began their innings cautiously, and with the score still in single figures Hugo March struck an early blow. Leon followed up with a wicket from the other end, but Horsham continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over ahead of the required rate. Knowing that only ten wickets would win the match, Wisborough applied the pressure, Josh Dixon contributing an outstanding bowling performance of 4-1-7-1, and when Eric Moore took a great catch above his head off Tom Colbran’s bowling, Horsham were four down with 30 runs still needed. But when the umpire turned down what Tom insists was a plum lbw, momentum was lost and the much needed breakthrough failed to come. Horsham’s middle order put together a commendable stand with no further losses to see them over the line to a six wicket victory. Ultimately a disappointing start to the season, but solid performances from Tom with the bat, Josh with the ball, Leon’s all-round contribution and good performances in the field leave cause for cautious optimism for better results to come.
