On a beautiful day on the Sussex coast, Wisborough Green travelled to Littlehampton for their Sussex County League Debut.

All started pretty much as normal, skipper Monday lost the toss and Wizzy were asked to field first.

Littlehampton started cautiously and after a tight opening burst from Travena and Thatcher restricting the hosts to 34 off the first 15 overs, it was the young Wells who struck first getting Lee caught at mid on by Travena, at this point Wizzy looked in control, however Littlehampton continued slowly but surely but a flurry of wickets in the 90s put Littlehampton on the back foot. Askew batted well for his 54 and a late swing of the bat brought Littlehampton’s innings too an end at 180 for 8 off their allotted 53 overs. Thatcher bowled his heart out to finish with fine figures of 4 for 83 off 23 overs.

Wizzy’s reply began badly and at 19 for 3 were up against it to say the least. At this point Edwards joined Hopkins and with some nice selected stroke play moved the score onto 63 before Hopkins holed out to midwicket off the skipper Rive.

Now Travena entered the scene and with Edwards compiled the partnership of the match to swing the game back in Wizzy’s favour. They punished anything off line and pushed the score onto 128 before Travena missed a straight one and was bowled for 28. Still ahead of the clock and with Edwards having passed his half-century the runs kept flowing, however wickets kept falling also and after Edwards was dismissed for a fantastic 75 Wizzy were still slightly short of their target.

The tail enders of Francis, Wells, Thatcher and Rough all contributed to push the game to the last over and with 3 balls to spare Thatcher pushed the winning run and a debut victory was achieved.

Wizzy skipper Monday said after the game “ WOW what a start to our debut season in the league, what a fantastic game it swung back and forth between both teams and no one could predict the result. I thought Thatcher and Wells both bowled with control and great thought, the batting however was slightly rusty after having to wait several weeks to get outside, lets enjoy our first win this season.”

With the cricket season baring down on us like Jonny Farmer on a free bar, Wizzy news decided it was time to meet the newest captain in the WGCC ranks. Mr Nick Sedgwick. Chief headline writer Ben Thatcher went along to meet the man affectionately known as "Sedge"

Full Name: Nick Sedgwick aka Sedge

D.O.B: 23 march 1964

Occupation: International playboy

Family: Harry, Toby, Jess and the long suffering Mrs S.

Batsman/Bowler/All-rounder - delete as appropriate.

Looping off spin

Occasional batsman with strong bottom Hand and poor eyesight

Greatest sporting achievement: Scored 120 when playing darts by myself aged 8.

Bad habits: Listens to Tim Mcmath

Good habits: Ignore James Sadler emails

Favourite food: Kennys burgers

Favourite joke: Farmer

What couldn't you live without: Food

Which WG cricketer do you most admire and why: Tim Mcmath. How someone so old and bald can still play is just amazing.

What are your intentions for WG sunday XI this year: Have fun, win games, drink beer and. Not pick Farmer.

How do you intend to deal with any indiscipline in the side this year: Hoppo will sit on them whilst Rob knight bores them about the square. They will then be forced to go out for the night with frank Vickery and finally spend an hour with their head in Travs kit bag.

And lastly, are the rumours true that you, Hoppo and Bags are conspiring to increase Tea from 20 minutes to 40 minutes to allow for more visits to the buffet table? No. Tea shall remain at 20 mins however we are introducing guest cakes for each match. We are also likely to bat second so tea can extend to an hour and a half.

Drinks breaks will also include a pie as requested by hoppo.

So there you have it. Our new Sunday captain has some strong views on ill discipline and food. But the cricket should be competitive but fun.

Wizzy news salutes players
Wizzy News would like to pay a special tribute to all those senior players who have unselfishly committed themselves to only drink beer for the duration of the drought to save water . Gentlemen - your undying commitment to the cause has not gone unnoticed. We could not help note that the levels of the dams in our area have been rising significantly in recent weeks - no doubt due to to your considerable efforts . We applaud your courage . Keep up the good work !

A cold blustery day greeted the Sunday all stars for their first match of the season at Pagham. Wizzy fielded a strong side with the likes of Hoppo needing some early season cake eating practice.

Newly elected Skipper, The Sedge, lost the toss and the opposition Captain (who must have been 95) decided to bat. Wizzy immediately carried on where they left last year…starting with 10 after Steve "I really am not on another planet" Calder Smith turned up 30 minutes late and then took a further 30 minutes to get change, finally entering the field wearing tennis shoes.

Opening the bowling with Trav "I have the smelliest kit bag in the world" and Jamie Self, Pagham found runs hard to come by and wickets started to fall. Travs and Jamie bowled exceptionally well keeping the runs down and taking wickets.

Harry Sedgwick entered the fray and the young Sedge soon was amongst the wickets bowling a tidy spell taking 3-23. It would have been 4 but our new coach, Alex, was clearly distracted at first slip by Hoppos description of the forth coming tea as a straight forward catch slipped thru his hands.

Eventually, despite the efforts of Calder Smith and his drifting spin bowling and some, frankly, comedy fielding from Chris Francis, Pagham reached 151 all out.

After an average tea with little selection, imagination or thought, Wizzy went out to bat. Captain Sedge has gone into the game convinced he had the strongest batting line up since 1902 but at 24-4 with only 8 runs from the bat he had clearly been deluded. Of the first 5 batsmen, the scores of 4,0,0 and 0 were entered into the book. Luckily Alex took his trusty bat and smashed Pagham around the ground scoring 81, before being out 4 from home. He was ably assisted by Hoppo who looked in great form scoring 35 not out. The winning runs were scored by Youngen who had been padded up for 2 hours and had to be escorted to the wicket in a silver blanket.

A great victory.

WN: So Horse, I understand that you have a great Cricket pedigree. I understand that you used to open the Bowling with Sir Ian Botham. Do you think he ever says he opened the bowling with a horse?

H: Well Beefy was a great chap and we often used to share a pale of water together

WN: And this season, how do you think you have been playing

H: Well, I have been saddled with wicket keeping again and keeping the reins

After a slight detour we found ourselves at Staplefield where we went into bat first.

After a very slow start against some accurate bowling from county bowlers we managed to accelerate the run rate. Sam J top scored again with 24 , ably supported by Hector 23 and Harry C 22, setting a reasonable target of 94.

Ansty started off very well with the opener retiring on25 early on. Our bowlers however had different ideas as wickets fell quickly , with Harry S taking 3 . The Opener then came back in and Marcus produced the ball of the season to bowl him 1st ball thus handing WG a memorable win. A special mention must go to the great fielding especially Alex's great run out and Harry C's keeping behind the wicket. Well done lads !

U10’s Wisborough Green v Ardingly 25th June 2011

Ardingly won the toss and elected to field first.

Callum Price & Angus Todd opened the batting. The bowling was reasonable, and kept the boys pegged back, Angus batting and backing up well. After 4 overs the score was a reasonable 207 for 1. Hugo March & Josh Dixon then came in to bat. Josh doing extremely well, with some great running between the wickets, Hugo scoring some good boundaries and decisive calling. Sedge and Harvey next in, both boys batted sensibly, scoring runs without loss. Leon Kilford and Alex Wadley next in to bat, Leon in his first U10’s match did extremely well, scoring 7 runs off 7 faced balls for no loss. Alex also batted really well, scoring 17 off 17 balls, with brave running between the wickets and a couple of well-timed fours, Alex was the highest scoring batsman. Toby Lonsdale and Henry Sunderland came in as the last pair; they faced some better bowling again, but managed to score a few runs, with just one unlucky run out.

The boys batted well, much better backing up from the non-facing batsman allowed us some quick runs, good decisive calling, care taken to preserve our wickets and some straight batting gave us a hard target for Ardingly to achieve.

Wisborough 268 for 3

Captain Callum Price set the field. Fielding by Wisborough was tight throughout the innings. The boys walking in and looking alert, meaning Ardingly struggled to get runs. First blood to Alex Wadley who got a wicket in the fourth over. Another wicket followed with the first ball of the 5th over courtesy of Toby Lonsdale. We played a few new players, who performed well. Leon Kilford bowled well for three overs, in his last over we got another wicket with a good run out, due in part to quick throwing in by Alex Wadley. Also Josh Dixon had a couple of great throw-ins from the boundary, hitting the wickets side on, he also bowled a good over, conceding just 1 run. We did miss a couple of easy run outs, the boys needing to take a moment before throwing in to ensure the ball is going to the correct end, easier said than done in the heat of a match! Other fielders worthy of mention, Harvey Bryant who’s bowling figures 2 for 9 made him the top wicket taker, and Henry Sunderland who got a wicket in his only over,

1 for 9.

A solid performance in the field, some great fielding to deprive Ardingly of boundaries, good backing up around the stumps to reduce over throws, and keeness to attack the hard ball. Well done!

Ardingly 240 for 6

A good win moving us up to 5th in the league table.

on young farmer is tough. Keeping wicket has been a real pleasure though, nothing better than watching someone so talented.

WNL And we understand you bowled this year

H. Yes, I managed to turn a leg over and get the hooves round the ball.

WNL But wasn’t it a ten ball over with 4 wides

H. Well maybe. But the stable door was opened and I took my opportunity. Better than Nose Bag Any Day.

WN: and how was presidents day

H Well I frankly had too many Oats but managed to knock the stile over, I mean the stumps over in the bowl off.

WN Any final words for your friends at WGCC

H Neyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
