Junior training on Friday evening

Just a quick reminder that there will be training for the Juniors on Friday evening as usual except for the youngest age group (U7s, U6s and U5s) who are taking a well deserved break this week.

Honours Boards

Congratulations to all who made it onto our Honours Board this week. Great to see some fielding performances being recognised including Tarnie ‘the cat’ Dixon’s fantastic catch and George Redgrove top class wicketkeeping display in the Second X1 game against Worthing.

Match reports

First X1 vs Broadwater

Wisborough 1st XI played against Broadwater in a competitive game at the green. Broadwater were top of the league going into the game, so we knew it would be a tough match.

Junior won the toss and chose to bat on a good wicket. Wizzy had a tough start against some good opening bowling, leaving us at 21-3. However, Ran Dawson and Chris Douglas steadied the ship to notch up a 94 run partnership with Ran scoring a respectable 32. Chris Douglas eventually fell after a brilliant innings of scoring 83 and being the anchor in the side. Jonny Farmer, Tom Dawson and DJ chipped in with some handy runs which left Wizzy at 228 at the end of our 45 overs.

In the bowling innings, Oscar Warmington and Junior opened up and got off to a good start as Oscar Warmington got a wicket off his 2nd ball with the help of some brilliant catching by Will Dixon. Their number 3 came out swinging which saw Broadwater notching up some quick runs until Junior bowled a beauty to knock over his off-peg. Their middle order batted very nicely as they scored the bulk of their runs until Will Dixon and Joey Calder-Smith came on later in the innings and cleaned them up. This gave Wizzy hope of a late comeback. However, their overseas unfortunately won them the game, carrying his bat and winning them the game.

A well contested game from the 1st XI against the top of the league but it wasn’t to be for us on Saturday. We look onto next week where Wizzy take on Middleton CC away from home.

Second X1 vs Worthing

WGCC 2nd XI put up determined performance against a strong Worthing 3rd XI

  • On a perfect sunny afternoon the WGCC 2nd XI away at Worthing were invited to bat having lost the toss
  • The opening pair, Chris Francis and Tarni Dixon, were subdued by the good line and length offered by the Worthing opening bowlers
  • The early run rate was miserly with around 25 runs scored in the first 10 overs although without loss.  The long grass in the outfield stifled runs scored when hitting along the floor.
  • Having done all the hard work Chris (16 runs)  was unlucky to be caught and bowled by the opening bowler just before he finished his spell
  • With a change in bowling more runs flowed and then a rash shot by Tarni (22 runs) saw his off stump re-assembled
  • Juan Vorster (44 runs) and Mick Hollands (36 runs) both batted very well and developed an abundant partnership scoring rapidly with elegant strokes through and over the long outfield
  • Mick was caught and then Juan eventually succumbed soon afterwards to a straight one whilst attempting a big shot
  • Raffety Finn (U14) and Dexter McCullen (U15) were next in and Dexter was very unfortunate to get an excellent ball from their 2nd change bowler who was probably also their fastest
  • Raffety and William Andrews developed the final partnership in the last few overs with Raff scoring 12 runs off the final over to leave WG 152 for 5 off their 40 overs
  • After the break Juan and William opened the bowling well however it soon become clear that one of the openers was going to attack anything not quite on a line or length.
  • Juan got the first breakthrough with a one-handed reaction catch in the slips by Tarni.  William was very unlucky not to get any wickets after a great display of swing bowling.
  • The opener continued to powerfully punish any balls that were not quite in the right area and he quickly got to his fifty.
  • Josh Dixon and Raff were then put on to bowl.  Josh bowled very tightly with only 11 runs coming from his 6 overs.
  • Raff got into his stride and in his third over he got the opener out on 84 ably caught behind by George Redgrove (U14) who was excellent behind the stumps throughout
  • Jackson McCullagh (U14) bowled towards the end and was unlucky to have 2 batmen with their eye-in to contend with.
  • Sadly the remainder of the runs were scored by the 28th over and Worthing were the worthy winners
  • A solid performance by the 2nd XI team despite the result
